Never played Oathmark as rank and flank never appealed, and I've not bought the minis, but I have bought a bunch (too many) of Northstars other ranges.
It's a tough call, but Northstar might make the most fun to build minis. They look good, have a lot of freedom and kitbash potential, and go together easily. The big difference seems to be instead of a many single options, you get a lot of a few options so you can kit your guys with the same gear.
Yeah I've been eyeing their kits because 30 for 30 USD seems like a decent enough deal, some of the stargrave and frostgrave options also seem pretty good. The deals for oathmark on Northstar's core website are also pretty good, they're each like 83 Pounds for 60+ minis of various types.
Necro, but does anyone has any thoughts on the Oathmark system? Published by Osprey but it seems to be one of their more in depth games unlike some of their blue book titles like the "Rampant" line and its seemingly getting a 2nd edition soon. Ive been eying their minis because they're pretty cheap (30-40 bucks for 30 28mm figures, with cool enough fantasy post roman aesthetics) but some videos shilling it have popped up like with 5 Leagues from the Borderlands and 5 Parsecs, some wierd coop titles ala Frostgrave or Stargrave
maybe because his new game is now out so the algorithm is pushing stuff related to his name.
it's from the same guy that made frostgrave, so it should be good (iirc the multifaction and kingdom rules are great, but I might remember it wrong).
I assume it's a bit more obscure because it's rank & file which is not everyone's cup of tea (and most will probably still playing an old warhammer edition) or has higher investment than a band for frostgrave.
oh, and frost/stargrave isn't coop, it's skirmish sized 1on1 with random monsters/events and some RPG elements you carry through missions (his new game and rangers of shadowdeep is coop tho). worth a look for how he did things.

Shoot, for some reason i confused Star and Frostgrave with the 5 Parsecs/Leagues titles and those are the coop ones. But yeah, it seems kinda neat, Frostgrave as a whole seems like a bit of fun, probably a funner game than some of the skirmish slop like TC

they're all part of the whole "alternative wargame" thing that is gw-slop, maybe infinity, then everything else, so easy to get mixed up.
all solid tho, 5 leagues is nice if you just want to push some minis around and cba to deal with waac-faggotry or having to find someone to play with.
Any fellow historyspergs have any recommendations for 15mm WWII minis? I have some North African Campaign platoons from Forged in Battle and minis in certain poses will consistently have certain defects across different packages.
Giant wall of brass is a zippo lighter for some scale. The lying ammo bearer minis often have concave faces that lack any and all detail. It's not super noticeable given the scale but I'd rather avoid having an army of mutants if possible.
Finally did my first match in Bolt Action. UK v. USSR v. Germany. 700pts. Very fast and a lot of fun.
My takeaways
-The bomb dogs from the Soviets are devastating then the handlers become a veteran SMG squad.
-The motherfucking PIAT. I hate those guys
-I had a whole squad FUBAR off the map right at the end. That was funny and unexpected.
I didn't know what game they were going to do, so I finished up the 88mm and the Panzer III the night before, just in case.
700pts doesnt go far when you have veterans for the Germans or the Brits
It gets you a ton of Soviets
Was a ton of fun. Glad I found this game. Will keep playing.
Having a lot of fun with friends on TTS playing Firelock 198X. High fluff, low crunch fantasy cold war with four very nicely flavoured factions available, intro video available here
A pro tip I love using for brickwork: get some plaster of paris and PVA glue. Heavily water down the glue and flow it between the bricks (or just brush the whole thing with the thin mix--important that it's thinned so it won't leave gloss--and wipe off the exposed surface) then pile on the plaster. Once it's dried, shake off the excess and rub anything loose off the surface with a paper towel. Boom, super fast mortar.
With that colour variegation you've already done it'll look awesome, trust me. Then if you want you can thin some brown ink and zap some water staining over it as well, but it might look too real next to everything else at that point.
I enjoy this shit more than the minis themselves so I'll stop there before I suggest anything excessive.
Though, what did you print the barrels with? If it's ABS, 20-30 mins in an acetone vapour bath (ie a shoebox) could go a long way, can't really go overboard with drums. Otherwise sandpaper. To properly honour your sweet-ass pallet.
Oathmark 2nd Edition got a preview, seems like they're consolidating the undead rules to the base ruleset, making magic items better, making monsters less good, giving more distinct special rules to each race to bring them to line with undead, and focusing on fluffing up the kingdom/campaign rules so they're a stronger draw. Other than that it seems like its a 1.5 more than a complete redesign. They mentioned the Undead, but i wonder if they're bringing in the other books into the main one, iirc it was individual hero/unit progression and upgrading, special unit formations like shieldwalls and squares, more town/nation building that gave you some small bonuses, chariots, engineers and river/water battles
Either way I hope they bring out more kits, their undead are a blast to build, I think I'll get some dorfs or humans next. I hope they bring out either heavy human cav, undead cav, artillery or chariots out in plastic
What technique did you use for bricks? (Sorry I'm late. I missed the updates to the thread.)
I have built my 1000pt “Human Defense Force” army for One Page Rules. In 40k speak, this is about Combat Patrol size.
It’s WIP. I know the list is sub optimal and has a hodge podge of plastic. There are reasons for this, but first, the photo.
So, what you’re looking at is two 10 man squads of regulars, two 10 man squads of veterans, a leader, and an “attack vehicle” (because force orginization wouldn’t let bring a “battle tank”. Special weapons are dotted throughout. 2 “Drum rifles”, 1 plasma gun, 1 sniper rifle.
I could’ve optimized the list, or done some fun things like added an extra 20 models via conscripts, but I didn’t want a skew list for an intro game.
The kits. Left, Ooh Rah in Starship Troopers colours. Bit bland so will go for colonial marine/cadian colours for the next batch. Middle, Stargrave Scavengers. Right, Stargrave Mercinaries, and back, WGA Cannon Fodder. And the tank is a Bolt Action Panther 4 or King Tiger, I forget. I do have an Airfix Challenger tank to go in its place, but I’ve misplaced it. I can give opinions on the kits if anyone is interested.
(Not mine, but an example of the finished Challenger kit. At £8, it's a cheap way to fill get a 28mm tank)
Finally, I’m torn on a bunch of options for the leader. At the bottom you can see a cop in overalls, and Indiana Jones. I also have an armoured cop, a cat girl, a praetorian drinking some tea, a praetorian with a power sword, and the starter Infinity models.

I've been trying to build a 1k HDF list too, but they have too many fun options so I end up having a low model count. How are you equipping the vets? I feel like I keep putting too many points into mine.

Tanks in OPR as a whole are a bit overcosted because they have too many guns and a single good melee charge can gut them, (apparently, they will get fixed in the next update), attack vehicles and walkers as HDF are your bread and butter because they're cheap and mobile and they both have a lot of options for weapons, including the flamer and melta/lascannon equivalents at good enough shot economy. Walkers are also anti melee screens along with the ogryn equivalent, the hidden/asshole picks are 20 man infantry squads with medical training, unless there's a sniper or anti regen around then those will stick like glue, 10 man squads are fine. Same with Veterans, who are still not as good as most elite units like the common SM equivalents or Orcs.
I've been trying to build a 1k HDF list too, but they have too many fun options so I end up having a low model count. How are you equipping the vets? I feel like I keep putting too many points into mine.
Dont be too afraid to equip vets, they end up being pretty cheap since they have low model counts and the best quality you can get as HDF, they're your non vehicle source of the Las cannon anti tank equivalent that hits at 3+ with an order when usually only vehicles have them at that roll, on anything that can get it, including vets and some vehicles, the stealth upgrade will make its money back easily since it gives a -1 to hit to all common anti tank weapons and others
the hidden/asshole picks are 20 man infantry squads with medical training, unless there's a sniper or anti regen around then those will stick like glue,
How would a sniper counter them? I thought medic training was a squad upgrade.
Another couple of "asshole" picks are conscripts/recruits. Double them up for a 20 man unit, then put a leader with "no retreat" on them and watch them not run away. They also devestate as melee screens with advanced rules, since you can assault at no penalty (they are 6 quality so -1 does nothing to them) or you can dig in to get a 3 cover save.
Infantry with hold order + a munition specialist means you can end up with 20+ shots at +3s.
Going sticky/assault conscripts was something I wanted to do, but supposedly assault is being removed/tweaked in 3.6, and I don't want to do asshole things for an intro game. Long story short, a friend rage quit 40k recently and I've talked him into giving OPR a try, using the pre-gen lists for his combat patrols to start (which are 1000pts).
I really want to do a walker and robot heavy list, and play Titanfall. But no 3D printer. I've been tempted to go heavy on Gunpla and rock up with a bunch of mechs from Front Mission, but might be too big. Or too small.
But low model HDF could work? You could go tank heavy?
Regular 1 = plasma gun
Regular 2 = no upgrades
Vet 1 = 2 drum rifles (the angry badger head with LMG combo was too silly to pass up) + Leader with munitions.
Vet 2 = 1 sniper
I did end up with something like 40-70pts left over, which I used to upgrade my leaders gear.
If I had more to work with, here's how I imagine my build would be.
For context I have two broad themes. One is a penal legion. Convicts pressed into service. With those surviving looting a bunch of shit. These are the guys in long coats and guys in orange prison suits in the photo. Vehicles would have bodged repairs and a bunch of backpacks and over junk for carrying loot.
The other is a professional army. I originally wanted a starship troopers theme, but they don't look good to me. They feel unpainted. I went with death guard green for some, and now they look like SG1. Which is certainly a look.
I'm thinking of going Castellan green and going for the colonial marines look. Or sticking to SG1 with mild camo (the current scheme)
At present, these two themes are blended together. This might make sense for a larger list, an elite core with cannon fodder convicts, but for now it looks a bit messy.
With that in mind, my big list might be something like this.
20 man Conscripts/Recruits with leader - As said above. Hitting on 6s, using them to hold objectives or suicide assault. Possibly with a leader with no retreat for extra bullshit.
Bunch of regulars/vets. Possibly with medic training with munitions leader, or a shotgun team with movement or munitions leader.
Bunch of walkers for backup.
I like the idea of going heavy on drum rifles and plasma guns. Plasma guns are fun anyway (and very cheap). I worry drum rifles might slow the game down, but putting that many shots down range, with rending, sound like a good time. Double vets + munitions leader + 4 drum rifles = 14 shots on 3s, 2s if they hold. Or better yet, loading up on shotguns and getting 20 attacks. They only have 12 inch range so you likely want the movement buff. But still, the point is buckets of dice each attack. Same with the big melee blob that can be near impossible to shift.
I keep seeing hope that Stargrave/Northstar release a generic robot kit. It could be interesting if that ever happens.
I do have more options, but this post is plenty long.
Medic, Flag and Radio for Infantry squads are a model upgrade, kill the model and you kill the buff, Snipers/Takedown lets you single out individual models in a unit and hit them as if they were a full unit
Not the best place for the photo, but wanted to get this uploaded. Can't make out the camo in the photo (and is hard to see from arms length). All they need is basing and washing, which can wait until after their first game.
Not sure if I should add something to the reptilians.
I had heard before that tanks were OP because they don't degrade. A 10 man squad, 5 die, only gets half it's attacks. A 10 tough tank at 5 wounds still opperates at full effectiveness. I vaguely remember a degradation rule that changed that, but I don't know.

that is a plus yes, but they're also somewhat expensive, are large models, and often have too many guns that drive up the price even more, if you go to some factions that have better quality then they're pretty unusable, HDF are the better ones and id still say that going for alot of walkers is a tiny bit better unless you follow the balance rules and used up all your activation allowance
