My understanding was it was a localization error, the Japanese manual for Metroid used gender neutral pronouns to refer to Samus ("They turned into a ball to go through small passages!", while the US and EU got a booklet that was translated with masculine pronouns for Samus ("He charges his beam and fires!") so it was arguably MORE surprising when players actually learned she was a Bird.
I think it's important to remember that the people who say this stuff are a minority of terminally online weirdos. The vast majority of Metroid fans probably never even heard of this "controversy". And the idea that Nintendo would ever consider even for a second making Samus canonically trans is just ridiculous.
It all because a really badly worded translation since Hirofumi Matsuoka used the word "newhalf" (a slag for tranny at the time) to describe Samus......which also could be referring to Samus being half fucking bird/Chozo.

Nintendo would do small bird jokes with Samus way before they ever do any tranny stuff.

This is what I always assumed when I heard about the "newhalf" thing, I assumed it just from her being "half human" because of the Chozo blood or whatever.

Samus received the Metroid DNA to cure her X infection. Of course, in Other M we learn that THE BABY contained Queen Metroid DNA. This is on top of her Chozo Mawkin DNA, and at the end of Dread she receives Thoha DNA.

I'm sorry, but Samus is a mutt at this point. But she's arguably the Mutt Queen AND that's pretty cool B)

I just beat Prime 2 with 100% of items. Didn't like the game until I got access to Sanctuary Fortress , then it got pretty good. Would say it's my least favorite Metroid game though.
Sanctuary Fortress is pretty cool, but as much as I love Prime 2, I can agree with that sentiment. There were too many "OK now where the fuck do I even go?" sections where you'd finish something in the light world, then have to go to the dark world but take a long, slow, backdoor route to get where you need to go and it's not usually clear where to start. I think Prime 2 does go a bit far with the map, a coworker once described the map of Metroid Dread as "They were really up their own butts when they made that map" but I think that applies to Prime 2 more.

just gonna throw this out here
back in the day if you had a GBA flash cart you had to run an emulator for GB games because of that voltage thingy
one of the weirdest bits was the dominant GB emulator had a feature that would extend the background layer to fit the GBA and the sprites still popped up like normal 4:3
this really made a great version of Metroid 2, you had long-range scanners for the rocks but the darkness was driven home by the monsters all up in your business

I'm starting my playthrough of the first Prime. I never had the opportunity to play it before so i was excited to start it. I can see why it's hailed as one of the greatest games of all time. Really liking level design and graphics so far.

Just caught wind of the "Metroid Ravenous" rumor floating around apparently originating from this tweet, also cross-posted to this article. Sounds like bullshit but if true: Lol, stuff is leaking out of Brazil once again (local image copies attached). This guy here speculates maybe it's a potential candidate for the September direct. Thoughts?

Samus turning into an energy Vampire because of Metroid DNA fuckery would be a pretty cool plot point. I also hope it's being made Mercury Steam. They hit it out of the park with the movement and combat, Dread just needed better art direction and a sountrack that isn't completely forgettable. If they could nail those two things down they could make my dream Metroid game.

Hoping this is true because I was terrified of Metroid becoming a joke again after you spend Prime 4 babysitting a group of redditors. Other M killed Metroid for half a decade but this says to me they already had something else lined up to ride the wave after Dread.

If this is yet another mainline game I really want Ridley to show up again, and maybe we can get some actual characterization out of him.
The most expressive Ridley has ever been outside of Smash is this funny little runway walk he does in Prime 3.

He could have started the boss fight but instead he registered he was too far away and did this curmudgeonly little march up to her so he could roar in her face. That is so in character for Ridley and I want more of it.

He was basically a wild animal in Other M and his appearance in Samus Returns was just a bonus cameo. I want him to actually be a part of the plot for once.

He should, however, Samus's side of the interaction should be the same, cold murderous rage, as always, there isn't anything to say for her, she wants him dead dead dead, and he won't die, the Universe itself fucking with her, or at least giving her the ability to kill her parents murderers multiple times.

I never liked that idea of turning Samus into a monster because it's like calling Dante from DMC "subhuman" because he's half human... the entire point of his character is that what part of him IS human is what leads him to victory over those who shed their humanity. Making Samus less human is a total "fucking why?" from me. We already got a Metroidvania MC who turns into the villain story from Mercury Steam, it's called Lords of Shadow.

Duck Billicus Maximus.

she wasn't human before we ever played her, she got Chozo'd up as a kid, how do you think she can even fucking stand on Zebes? no matter how much is added to Samus's DNA, she's undeniably "human" in nature and is still Samus Aran, explorer, mercenary, warrior.

I think the issue isn't that Samus is a gene spliced suprahuman, it's the worry that Ravenous would toy with Samus being a feral gene spliced suprahuman, therefore losing her humanity even more. Or that she slowly becomes more and more Metroid again to the point that she can't even touch anyone or anything lest she drains it entirely by accident, essentially rehashing and expanding the end of Dread. Nintendo likes to name Metroid games based on things that happen to Samus. Metroid 2: Return of Samus, Metroid Fusion (Samus fused with Metroid DNA), Super Metroid (That's a big THE BABY), Zero Mission (Samus' very first mission as a bounty hunter?), Other M (She was the mommy to THE BABY but wait TWO MOMMIES?), Prime 2: Echoes (where the echos of the first game haunt Samus in the form of Dark Samus), Prime 3: Corruption (OH NOES SHE GONNA BE A EVIL PHAZE MONZTER), Prime 3: Beyond (Samus subjected to a plot known as "Beyond Bullshit")

So if they keep up that trend, Ravenous would describe Samus being as energy hungry as a Metroid, hinting that the Thoha DNA can't contain the Metroid DNA for long. Maybe the Federation deems her too much of a risk now and sends a fleet of the big brother to the EMMI, a more military designed death robot compared to the DNA sampling EMMI in Dread, and Samus has to hide out on a planet while avoiding the assassin bots sent after her, all the while she's becoming more and more feral.

If that sounds like my literal first idea, that's because it was, and I hope Nintendo comes up with something way less lazy lol
