Welcome to a new series where I talk about great characters and horrible characters. I am also willing to take requests, but I promised myself the first character I review would be a VERY harsh review of one of the top 10 WORST characters of all time: Ariel. Oh, you mean that mermaid that people absolutely love?
Cons of the character:
1. She sells her voice to someone SHE KNOWS IS EVIL, in exchange for a pair of legs and a guy she does not even know. On top of that, it is all one sided, she could be dooming her kingdom for someone who she had no interaction with. She sort of did, but SHE did all the interacting, so he had nothing to do with her. So she sold her voice to a guy who only knows her voice because he heard her sing......no...just no!
2. She follows the love at first sight. Unlike Frozen, where they do some playing around and even making fun of this troupe, this is following the horrible troupe by the book. On top of that Eric had no interaction with her before that. Also, 3 DAYS to fall in love? You expect me to buy that? In both Frozen and Beauty and the Beast we do not know how long it was for Anna and Kristoff to fall in love, nor do we know how long it was for Belle and the Beast. But THREE DAYS?!?! You expect me to buy that?!?!
3. She is not a very good singer. I am sorry, but I think not only does "part of your world" have a bad beat and lyrics, I think Ariel is not a very good singer. There are so many characters that can sing amazingly like Frollo, Elsa, Quasimodo, Mulan, but not Ariel.
4. Her 'develpment' is actually very bad. She is spoiled, almost dooms her kingdom, AND almost the world just to be with a guy (I will explain how this can actually get done well when I review Anna from Frozen), after selling her voice to someone SHE KNEW WAS EVIL! She only had one line of dialogue to show any growth, and it is quick when she is apologizing to her dad as she is being turned into one of those worm things, but...YOU NEED MORE THAN JUST THAT TO DEVELOP HER! And I am pretty sure she only said it to get him to help her, so she could get what she wanted in the end, as the line was VERY unconvincing.
5. She is not a Mermaid. She is actually a Siren. Yes. Think about it. Eric fell in love with her because of her voice. Second her voice is shown to have hypnotic abilities when used by Ursula once she gets it. That coupled with how awful she acts, I can safely say she is in fact a Siren.
Pros of the character.......
I got nothing........
As a character, she get's a big fat F-, for being so selfish, inconsiderate, and manipulative.
Next up will be a double review covering two similar characters. Anna and Rapunzel, where I will be giving both positive reviews, but also a compare and contrast (Spoiler: Anna's will be a bit more positive, and I will go into more detail why then)
Remember if you have any character you want me to review, please suggest them! And no. They do not have to be princesses. I wanted to review Ariel first so I can get her review out of the way, and I wanted to do Anna immediately after due to her actually being sort of Ariel done correctly, and I have to make Anna's review doubled with Rapunzel due to (and I have to agree), their similarities.
