hydrostatic shock performance
No pistol caliber (well, never say never I guess) is going to leave behind a permenant wound channel based on velocity. You only get fast enough for deformation and tumbeling to occur until you get into rifle calibers.

Hydrostatic shock isnt technically a real phenomena but it is a very useful term for describing "flesh tearing because of the temporary wound cavity" which depending on where someone gets shot may or may not even come into play. Fundamentally no matter what sort of bullet you use they kill by poking holes in people.

Federal HST is great in my opinion because it so reliably feeds any gun even though other hollowpoints have more impressive expansion.

I very much appreciate how much thought you've put into your EDC and gear though, very neat set up in general.

It being a cool crowd in here today has really made posting a nice way to pass the time.

230gr HSTs are what I use in my Dan Wesson Specialist for carry. For my Staccato P I load either Hornaday Critical Duty 135gr FlexLock +Ps for most of the year, and Underwood 90gr +P Xtreme Defenders for cold weather when heavy coats start getting worn since they don't have a hollowpoint to get gummed up and fail to expand, but still provide similar hydrostatic shock performance as a hollowpoint.
If you trust the Lehigh defense bullets to work well, why change to hollow points in the summer? Conversely, if you don't trust the flexlock to perform well through thick clothing, why use them? After all, you don't get to choose if an assailant is wearing a jacket in July to disguise their identity.

In most places, someone wearing a jacket in July is probably going to die of heat exhaustion before you can draw on them.
Gentlemen of particularly good heat adaptation could be here, he thought

I mean it kinda is, but you need to be hitting someone with something going really fucking fast (>2500fps) and you have to hit them in the right spot and so on and its still not even the primary reason why they're dying anyway.

Its not a practical consideration for home defense.
larger diameter projectiles can achieve H-shock at lower velocites. I believe the threshold for .45 caliber rifles is around 2400FPS vs ~2600FPS for .30 caliber, with .50 caliber and above lower still. I assume this has to do with the larger projectile physically displacing more flesh or something like that. Bullet face also plays a big part.

It's still not slow enough for pistol velocities however.

I keep my home defense AR loaded with 55gr vmax. This type of projectile has an extremely low expansion threshold of just 1600fps. Out of my 10.5 i get 2600fps with it. If my math is right, i should be getting sufficient velocity for fragmentation out to 350! meters with my 10.5. So I find it to be an attractive projectile for short barrels for that reason alone.

However, there's also the added benefit of very little comparative overpenetration in a home environment. This stuff just dumps all its energy on contact with anything. Drywall, plywood, furniture, appliances. Dramatically less overpen than even basic 55gr FMJ.

But little overpen can be a positive and a negative. It'll be safer for anyone else in your house and your neighbors, but will perform miserably if you have to shoot through a barrier like sheet metal or glass or anything really.

Pic rel; some 55gr vmaxs i recovered from the 220 yard range shot from my 10.5.

this doesn't address mag capacity bans but those are stupid easy to get around anyway. still doesn't make up for the birthright citizenship bs they pulled
A DC court ruled on those saying the magazine limits were unconstitutional but specified they didn't consider "high capacity magazines" necessary for self defense. Or something along those lines.

They need to stop the platform bans because then they can at least say magazine limits go against common use.

Found a good deal on the Python on the website of one of my local bang shops. It'll take 4-6 days for them to get it in. And Colt is doing a $100 rebate on all revolvers aside from the SAA and select autos. Today was the last day I could purchase it, but I have until the 15th to submit the rebate claim. I just need the serial number to submit it.
