I'm surprised they ever did? Entire premise is that there is some sort of level of "standard" and experimenting can go horribly wrong.
You had to clear it with them first. I know one of the annual reports (on archive.org I think) encouraged dining room decoration (within limitations, obviously, probably something decorated with porn pin-ups would be frowned upon), and as far as food went there were tons of one-offs, most of which aren't well-documented, from what I've gathered there were allowed, limited experiments that had to be cleared with corporate and a second menu of additional regional items. These included things like hot dogs (exclusive to Wal-Mart restaurants) and variations of what they already had like the Old Bay Filet-o-Fish.

The last permanent addition to the menu was the McFlurry, which was a franchisee invention from the 1990s (a Canadian one) and he had to basically demonstrate that it was able to fit into their existing operations without problem. A huge part of the problem nowadays is that the mom-and-pop franchisees are disappearing and replaced with large multi-unit operators (which McDonald's explicitly tried to avoid in the early days) which aren't going to rock the boat when it comes to new ideas...and even in the best of times, it was making sure that Ray Kroc wasn't pissed off in the process.

There's a funny story about when the Egg McMuffin was introduced, the franchisee had a bunch of slides prepared with sales information and increases, but Kroc was sold on the samples provided to the executives as part of the presentation, eating two even after having lunch.

Forgetting service, when was the last time you guys were happy with mcdonalds for dinner? I just got back from some family stuff, and I was fucking starving. I embarrassedly got a double quarter pounder meal and a spicy chicken wrap and Im still fucking hungry!! In fact i could probably eat more now than when I drove in.

Thats $30aud - the price of a steak at the pub btw - and Im still fucking hungry. If its not cheap and not filling then whats the fucking point of fast food?? Ahhhhh

I'm not making a personal attack here but nobody eats McDonald's anymore other than people who have an inclination to addiction, and they still go to McD because of the cravings. If you'll do a bit of introspection I'm almost certain you'll find that was also your reason for going. And I hope it's step 1 towards not going anymore.

Any sense of addiction for that specific greasy and cheesy flavor a good-bad double cheeseburger there had died when they started pricing their asses like they were in the nice parts of Chicago and NYC everywhere. It's why I don't get them barring the rare "yeah we can't be fucked to cook, and want burgers." It's at best a once or twice a year thing now.

Doesn't help I can just make a sinfully greasy grilled cheese via bacon grease if I want that experience now.

Quick tip, keep your McDonald's receipts. There'll be a survey code on the bottom of it. Speaking from my experience, you have the opportunity for a buy one, get one free sandwich of equal value. You'll need to go on a website to fill out the survey for a code.

There's also just habit. They've always gone there, so they go there now, even though it's a ghost of its former self. I can't imagine going to McDick's for anything but maybe a snack. Or a coffee. And there's still places with a dollar for a giant drink. A lot of places have reasonably priced food but charge like three bucks for a soda. So if there are no lines, I'll get the food one place and the soda at McD's. Fuck both of you.
