Dude, you had fucking 30k players. How did that cause your servers to completely melt down like this? :story:
That's incredible, they recovered cause its free, but the real numbers come after this free week
I know everyone likes to be a hater here but I decided to hop on yesterday to try the Night Marsh map and I couldn't put it down. I had countless tense, funny, stupid and outright terrifying moments. I played a bit during S1 but idk, this is my favorite shooter in years and years. Definitely helps when you've got a friend squad.
Sounds like you were havin a blast!

Right, the retention is the thing. If they can't at least have a number comparable to before the free weekend, they're fucked(seems like they'd need 11k, since it had dropped just below that prior to the f2p week). Although they could just eventually decide to make the game f2p entirely(probably would have done better to begin for the first month if that were the case) and then just charge for content rather than trying to rely on unit sales. Even if they can keep 40k players per day, I doubt that'll justify the 3+ billion dollars Sony blew on Bungie.

Bungie finally figured out how to pump the numbers

Just know you’re playing slop, that’s all. If it’s fun for you, dope. It’s not what ANY of us Destiny fans asked for and it objectively killed our game. If Bungie was competent and handled both games at the same time, I’d have no issue with it. But, they can’t, so they killed my game in favor of Marathon. So Fuck’em, and fuck the game.
Marathon objectively killed D2? No, objectively Bungie's mismanagement killed Destiny. Activision tried to get them to end D2 on TFS and start working on D3, that's why they broke up. They killed D2 bc it should have been put in maintenance mode ages ago and Marathon's failure forced them to focus on one thing at a time. Do you really wish Bungie tortured another year or two of content out of D2 to subsidize more marathon development?

Long post response, spoiled for brevity.

Activision happily got out of their contract with Bungie in 2019, after Forsaken released and way before The Final Shape, because Bungie’s cash burn rate was historically high, they basically make no profit. Marathon started light development in 2019, also around the time of Tarkovs massive popularity spike. However, real hardcore work on Marathon started speeding up around the end of 2023-start of 2024, a point in time where the noticeable decline in D2 started. PVP was essentially abandoned and we know this now because any dev that was good at PVP development was moved over to Marathon, objectively hurting Destiny 2. Then, resources company wide were taken from the D2 team and shifted over to marathon. Devs, support structures, money, time. Yes, Bungie management made the literal decision to end service for D2, but don’t be a nigger and act like that wasn’t because they believe in the sunk cost of Marathon more than Destiny, because they do. $250,000,000 and most of the higher end talent in the studio went into developing Marathon, a shitty, one game mode product that barely sold better than renegades, D2’s latest and least played expansion. All of those resources were taken AWAY from Destiny and put towards marathon, actively harming it. As this update will show, the D2 dev team can make quality, fun content still but were hamstrung by management BECAUSE management has tied their future to marathon, not just because they decided destiny was done. They essentially created their own competition and want it gone. Destiny has life in it still, the tranny slop game does not.

Yes but it doesn't make any sense to blame Mrathon - leadership at Bungie who manage both games fucked up massively and bc of it Bungie deserves to fail. Marathon didn't mind-control Bungie leadership into being retards, Marathon went overbudget by $200 million bc Bungie leadership was already retarded.

If the game wasn't sunset, D2 dev team would have drip-fed all this content over 18 months instead of giving it to you all at once so they don't "overdeliver", it's super gross they were sitting on all of this stuff ppl were asking for just because they think it lets them monetize somewhat more.

What you're mad about, i think, is that you don't have Destiny 3, and you should have it. Activision wanted Bungie to wrap up the D2 plot at around TFS and then everything after should have been part of D3. They wanted Bunganalia to work on D3 in parallel, bc that's the only sane way to make software.

even the cinematic of killing the unibrow hints that they wanted to be done with D2 and try other stuff, however it's just basic implication skills to think bungo wanted to put D2 on the freezer and work on marathon, however if you look at the stuff that's out, they had like 6 projects made to burn cash and some speculators implied it was intentional to inflate company price for the sony buy out before the guys at the top golden parachuted from bungo.

not to mention that during the content vaulting shit they claimed that the engine was hard to work with yadda yadda, nevermind the chinks being able to do what they claimed it was not possible and for fucking phones with destiny rising, PHONES.

now with marathon hitting 40K again you can bet some faggot will sales project that shit hard for sony execs, if they will fall for that or not i do not know because there's a ton of people on destiny's side making noise for D3 with the copium that sony will listen to the uprorar and shelve marathon as maintenance mode too to focus on D3.

Those are all still mismanagement items.

There's 0 fucking reason a company of 1,200 people (now ~900) would need every person in the company to focus on one single item - doubly so when one if the items (Destiny 2) has already been completed, shipped, and was on some level of maintenance mode prior.

Management should have been courting the Destiny 2 crowd the entire time from the very basic (if you have a D2 account, you get a few D2 themed skins/items/whatever the fuck) to the more complex but still easy (if you have a D2 account, there's a few special D2 only playtests for Marathon) that they actively didn't do. Those would have cost $0 by the way. You could even just look at what the industry does - even Blizzard, the worst company on planet Earth, has cross-IP bundles (WoW time gives you D4 items, D4 stuff gives you WoW stuff, etc).

The decision to sunset Destiny 2 should have been made 2 years earlier or 2 years later and not in the middle of the launch of your new titles. It almost certainly should have been in Destiny's universe in some way and if it's just a limited game mode that never really changes it probably could have even been a Destiny 2 expansion instead. There's 0 reason why whatever the successor to Destiny 2 is (and if it's not Marathon) that it could have been acknowledged in the face of the backlash (similar to Diablo Immortal prompting the most thrown together Diablo 4 trailer ever) and the studios unpreparedness is a reflection of poor management.

If you've got nearly a thousand employees the output should be drastically better than this and the only people you can blame are the managers/execs. Activison must have been jumping for joy when Bungie wanted to leave.

There is a small part of me morbidly curious that if Marathon was a 'salvage' game that came out of a failed version of what would have been Destiny 3 (similar to Overwatch or Devil May Cry). There's also a small part of me that wonders if D2's hasty shutdown was management realizing that some of the ~250 people they laid off this year were mission critical for Destiny 2 long term and decided to just cut off their nose to spite their face at this point.

Point of clarification: the original Activision contract was for two-year cycles of new game -> minor updates -> major expansion -> minor updates. So under the initial plan, D1 would have ended after TTK, D2 would have launched and ended after Forsaken, and then D3 would come in, with a bunch of minor content updates sprinkled in there. Wherever TFS would have ended up would have been several full game releases into the lifetime of Destiny.

That said, Bungie's mishandling of the series is certainly to blame, but that mismanagement extended to everything else they were doing too. They shuffled devs around to countless incubation projects over the years, wasting time and money and manpower on games that never even came close to the light of day. Frequently, that included senior devs whose experience was sorely needed to keep Destiny development on track. And when they finally felt like they had something worth investing more resources into, they not only went whole hog into it, they started pulling more developers from Destiny just to get it out the door. And all of that for a game in a very niche genre that is struggling to have a decent population even when the game's free to play.

And then they make the even dumber decision to just throw Destiny in the trash and focus solely on the niche game. Like, you can't even argue that Marathon didn't kill Destiny, they couldn't have made it more obvious without out and out saying so in their announcement ("fuck you, Destiny is dead, come have a blast in Marathon!!!"). Studio has two games, they stop supporting one in favor of the other, Destiny is dead because of Marathon. Put another way, there would have been no reason to kill Destiny if they didn't have something else to focus on instead, barring the entire studio shutting down, of course.

I don't disagree that a lot of this stuff was probably in the works for a while and they're dropping it all at once because they don't have to worry about spacing things out anymore, but that's just it, isn't it? They wouldn't have needed to drip-feed content to such an extent if there wasn't so much retardation going on behind the scenes getting in the way of actually making stuff for their breadwinner game. Instead of continuously chasing after developing multiple games at once when they clearly didn't have the capacity to (a trend going back literally decades, back to the pre-Halo days), they should have focused on just making one game the best they could. But they didn't, so here we are.

I just played this for the first time and I have a few comments.
1. I like what the aesthetic "is attempting" I don't like what it is.
2. The UI is dogshit, and not because of the aesthetic, but because of the iconography
3. What the fuck is anything, nothing looks like anything its representing.
4. The gameplay is the most vanilla boring shit i've ever seen.
5. Why do I have so many fucking doodads, why do I need a radial menu to use these fucking items.
6. Holy shit I hate this
7. This game fucking sucks
8. Why is this called Marathon
9. I quit the game after 2 runs
10. I wouldn't even play this for free.

As far as we know, no. Marathon was used as A. A way to use a dormant IP that Bungie owns and B. An excuse to easily sell (Marathon wasn’t really known until Mandalore’s video series on it but whatever) an extraction shooter from Bungie to the public. The rumor has it that a higher up executive, probably Jason Jones, played Tarkov and loved it so much that he immediately started development on his own extraction shooter, using Marathon as a skinwalker to do so.

There is way too much shit to grok. What are all these different categories of shit? I played Marathon Durandal earlier and don't see the slightest resemblance. The aesthetic kind of reminds me of the System Shock remake.
i'm not a fan of how system shock remake bastardized alot of the game but there's no need to offend it like that.

i thought the game was a free weekend but nah, it's up until 09 june, which is the day the last destiny 2 update rolls, lol.
