Unironically, in a non-spergy way, it's because they are written by women for women (fujoshi) who have no understanding of how romance (or sex) between two men works. There's been a lot of "academic" drivel written about gay fiction penned by women which essentially boils down to "there can't be any mean ole misogyny if there are no women involved!". Whereas of course Maurice was written by an honest-to-goodness homo.

I've seen Love Simon get described as a gay story for straights, which I agree with. I've read some gay written by a woman books which I mostly liked because I'm a sucker for emotional scenes. (Hence why I love writing drama, lol.)

Yes. Maurice is definitely superior because E.M. Forster actually was a gay man. That said, I can't stand reading Proust, because God he's boring.

The biggest reason Maurice is a respected gay film is most likely because James Ivory is also an old school gay man. Dude is like 90 now.

I honestly cant disagree that Maurice is quite probably the best gay themed film in existence. I found Hugh Grant hotter in it though. There are a few other films that come close, like Latter Days, and Another Country.

Another Country is great. It started my love for Colin Firth.
