Zdzisław Beksiński has been a favorite when it comes to gothic style surreal art. Used to have a really nice collection of his stuff on a hard drive that is no longer working. Always seem too lose a favorite one that was of a long 4 legged creature. It was really similar to the first image below. I remember seeing it in the traveling Guillermo Del Toro personal art exhibit from years back.

Really need to get a coffee table book of his work. Always find something new when looking for that old piece. At this point I'm not even sure if I am remembering the right image or if it is just something stitched together from thinking about trying to find the image. Would love to hang a piece but what room of a house would his work go in without seeming creepy?

I agree, his art may be eerie but at the same time I just can't look away. And the more I look the more details I discover. What's even more impressive is that supposedly he was self-taught too.

I can't seem to find it anymore, but I remember seeing one of a tree a while ago, it had a lot of green. It was a lot less creepy than his other works, it might be fit for hanging if you can find it.

Also this might not be what you're looking for, but it's the only one I can think of that fits your description.
