There's totally no reason for any serious protesting over this. It was an exceptionally bad shoot of a scumbag in a wheelchair. The chief and mayor are pissed and the shooter was terminated immediately, effective in a week. He's almost certainly going to be indicted, quite possibly before noon tomorrow. I'm just going to go busk in the plaza by the courthouse with some signs until he's indicted, instead of my usual spot at Pennington. . Pretty self serving little move by me and my young native friend actually. santana carries a bullhorn at these things. This is a nice opening for us to rave about the nationwide police corruption and racial violence in comparison to our fully inclusive department with its gay chief.
Santana is a space Mexican. I think of the Tohono O'Odham variety but I'm not sure. Totally south tucson vato from a big working class family. his mom is real outspoken, but yvette could be his sister. i don't know them at all. there's been lots of death around them from covid, gang violence and suicide since the pandemic started. He's matured a lot in the years i've known him. He was a rough little gansgter in his late teens when I first got to town.

Ryan Remington, an off duty TPD officer, working security at a mall, shot wheelchair bound Richard Lee Richards 9 times. Dick Richards was, to be kind, a highly unsavory character with a long criminal history that included serving 10 years for attempted murder and some time for smuggling aliens for profit, being white, the black community isn't going to care enough to come out about it.
We praise Chief Magnus and Mayor Romero for their swift action terminating Remington after four years of service and calling for his prosecution.
Though the public outrage is not really necessary, we will demonstrate at the court house until he is indicted. i'm more wanting to do this to point out the superior community contract that we have in Tucson to those of other places were police violence is swept under the rug completely or erupts into violent civil unrest.
I want to highlight the corruption in most cities' police departments that has resulted from their militarization and infiltration of white supremacists into their ranks, which is not such an issue here. They haven't got much heavy gear here and they don't go out on patrol heavily armored. The chief is gay and his chief of staff is a lesbian. Tucson is a kind town. Awful shit is going to happen in cities. I'm grateful to live in a city that works.
