Well, that's just not true. He was quite a well known figure in the scientific community well before any of the controversy surrounding his opposition of bill C-16. So, you're flatly incorrect on the facts there. Peterson is in the top tenth of the top one percent of cited researchers.

I've said before I'm a layman. Just pages before you showed up, I asked someone their assessment of his scientific contributions. I would have expected you to take issue then, but maybe you hadn't seen it. To some degree I stand corrected, but considering of all the people, positive and negative about peterson I've never heard such a resounding endorsement of his credentials, I take it with a grain of salt.

And since this conversation isn't happening in the scientific community it's bit of a moot point.

Take a, as a sample, a website like goodreads, and maps of meaning has about 5 reviews from before him appealing to the meme magic wave (the first 14 years since the book was published) and 505 reviews in the 5 years after he did so, so I'm not that far off from the mark.

Again, untrue. A corollary, how would you know? None of you have read it. It's literally his first and only textbook. How many hours of your life have you spent nibbling at his public image on this Scandinavian interpretive dance forum without the slightest context for his positions?

A cathedral is a public and communal building that stands the test of time. How would I know? I don't know. At this point it's probably about equal to the amount of hours I was enthusiastic about him. I wouldn't have read Jung if it hadn't been for Peterson, as well as some of the russian classics (although I was already in a russian literature phase).

The context is his public appearances, hundreds of hours of him talking about things, some of his public writings. What, I'm not qualified enough to have an opinion on the man who spent years of his life trying to appeal to the masses on tv?

The book is, fundamentally, an empirical description of the meta-structures of culture and the process of its generation via existential logical graphing as imagistically represented by schematic diagrams. In other words, it's an extremely comprehensive empirical explanation of how people generate belief structures, how they represent them to themselves, and why.

So, if you're a psychologist, or a scholar of philosophy, or a student of mythology, it's unfathomably valuable to have his work at hand, not merely because it applies such creative methodology in service of the depiction of these meta-structures which constituent the fundamental constituent elements of our collective consciousness (something that you can then do to your own fields and subjects of interest), but also because it provides a robust methodological paradigm for the analysis of the products of human thought.

I mean you're not really making a strong case for why it would be comparable to a cathedral, something that both takes a 100 years to build, hundreds of people to work their whole lives on it. There are useful guides on youtube how to run your minecraft server I'm sure. Invaluable to some, ignored by most.

It was good enough that Harvard had him teach it as a course for quite some time.

Yet Peterson advices young men to go into the trades instead of to university. That shows you his opinion of the value of what he was doing there. More harm than good, overall, by his words.

I've decided this will be my last post on this website. I like you, I think you're a reasonable person. However, I can tell you're not very experienced in the art of reasoning itself. I promise you that you will not develop that skill on the farms

Well one thing you might want to learn is that if you want to reason succesfully, you do more than just assert things. You need to actually support that assertion with evidence to make a good argument. Since you're not clear at all why you think I'm bad at reasoning, a pattern that has run throughout our interaction, I'd say at the very least I'm better at it than you.

Honestly, you could have picked a worse person to deify, because Peterson is generally very good at supporting his assertions with evidence, such as supporting the value of IQ tests or big five tests with how strongly those results correlate with results such as lifetime income, and the fact that the link is stronger than any other link in the field of psychology. You know, when peterson isn't making false claims about his own life, or defending the concept of white privelege as something to be ashamed for (but repackaged with different words).

If you learn to reason like peterson, you'll be in good shape. I hope your big ego thing is trolling, but I don't think it is. It reminds me of the person that sends compliments to the chef not because he had a really good food experience, but he likes to experience himself as a person who's opinion is that important.

It takes one to spot one, I guess. I like to think I've grown past it, but the fact that I want to 1up you proves otherwise.

You were a nice momentary diversion, you taught me something about what william james and jung believed. I haven't yet gotten around to verifying if it's actually the case, but it's probably true. One thing that bugs me about Jordan Peterson is that most of his advice is tame. His general audience is mostly working to lower middle class males. While most of his advice is solid, I do think that sometimes he comes off as naive. It shows when he talks about identity politics and the realities of modern dating. He’s stuck in the 1950s mindset of provincial Canada.

I started watching lobsterman's videos just before 12 rules for life came out; after some reflection I decided to gtfo of my current degree and study something else, eventually cut the toxic scum I'd been hanging around with out of my life, started exercising again, and just all around began to sort my shit out.

5 years since then and I've graduated, I work in a high-paying field, I'm engaged, and I'll be buying a house this year. I'm still a fat fuck though, but working on it.

You won't hear from most of the other people with similar stories, because they'll have fucked off the internet if they had any sense; plus it doesn't help that associating yourself with JBP is social suicide now, so yet another reason to not disclose that it was his book/lectures/whatever that set you on track. That and I'm no longer really a fan of his since I don't need his messaging anymore, I'm subbed to his youtube and will occasionally tune in if he has a good guest on (it's good when he has scientists on, less so when it's about hot-button political shite), I suspect similar people to me would feel the same.

I like the guy, his philosophy and books aren't terribly groundbreaking, but they're good, simple advice that I'm sure plenty of modern day bugmen didn't get from their parents/teachers because they all grew up in coddled hugboxes where everyone's a winner and participation alone is worthy of reward.

Forming good new habits is difficult, and if something about his delivery manages to inspire people to actually follow through that's a lot more valuable than the content itself. Is all completely subjective so someone might be saying how a self help book changed their life but they look to you as the same as always with maybe extra smugness and not much else.

People who say they were in a slump and some 12 rules for life or The Secret gave them the feels and help them get over it are probably being honest but most of people get emo at some point and get over it eventually regardless.
