It seems to really depend on the jurisdiction, TBH. Generally tasers, knives, and even guns may be transported in checked bags so long as they are stored safely and according to flight regulations. One big problem is if you forget something like this in your purse or carryon, generally it would be found while you're going through security--after you've checked your bags. There's no real easy way to leave security and go "get your bag back" to put it in your checked bag.Ahh, okay. I'm not from the US, so not familiar with the laws surrounding that sort of thing over there. I thought they would have confiscated it, rather than just let her check it into her bags. I'm strangely comforted knowing it's probably just a taser.
For reference, I once forgot about a wine opener in my bag and nearly had it taken because it had a 3cm blade. They very nicely went out of their way to tuck it into my suitcase instead of binning it/SPOILER].
The main issue lies in WHERE this happened, NYC, which has some of the strictest laws on carrying weapons on your person. I accidentally went through a TSA checkpoint a year or so ago in a southern state with a very small swiss army knife on my keychain. The TSA agent pointed it out and confiscated it, and that was the end of that. In contrast, people get popped for this statute all the time just walking down the street in NYC, and the fact it happened in an airport is probably why she was arrested.
