I used to do it with friends, we lived in a run down apartment in NYC and paid no rent, the landlord just didn't even investigate. It was great, real flop house hours. "Dumpster Diving" as a term was popularized by the 'free Kevin' crowd and carders (many under aged) that used to steal CC carbons and get themselves nice fast modems and new computers by mail order when getting a credit card was nearly impossible unless you were over 30. This was a profoundly mid and upper middle class white activity with a generous helping of semitism.

I loved doing that. I was really into scrapping so I'd break down junk in my apartment and take them to the scrap yard. I kind of miss it, sometimes.
