Thanks for the insight, Dusty (and Joyce). Nice to see Our Hero put in a slightly more sympathetic light.

Interesting (and sad) about his brother. I thought he was non-functional in a different way. (Reminds me of the situation of someone I knew growing up, but that's neither here nor there.) This sort of behavior usually reflects some serious childhood abuse, and I wouldn't rule sexual out, even if July 4th didn't happen.

It's pretty obvious why Our Hero suffers from behavioral problems and emotional dysregulation.

This was already confirmed by Phil, years ago, when he gave a timeline of his you and specifically mentions the name of the school.
 
So, confirmed that Phil went to a Special School, one where even a sympathetic outside observer states that the denizens were not at all bright.

And yet we have Phil the other day talking about how scarred he is because he was taunted for being 'special ed' while at school.

So is he lying about being taunted, or was he SO 'special' that even the other not-real-smart kids thought he was stupid?

I suppose it's possible that the taunting happened at college, but then you have to wonder if he went around telling people left right and sideways that he graduated two years late from Happy Rainbow Sunshine Academy for Special Friends.

Dusty: thanks a lot for volunteering ti share this info. It sheds a lot of light on why Phil is the way he is, and also explains a lot about why you have a less pessimistic view of him than the rest of us. Phil, it seems, never had a chance. His dad was a jerk, his mom was eyeball deep in her own issues, and his brother was violently mentally ill. I feel sorry for Child Phil. Adult Phil can go fuck a cactus, but Child Phil was just dealt a shitty, shitty hand.
 
Damn. So I guess every time we chant "Angelo did nothing wrong!".... Shit, we might have to stop with the pro-Angelo festivities on July 4th. Sure, he didn't rape Phil, but beating him and all that? That's just as bad.

On a lighter note, thank you, Dusty for sharing this with us. It's given quite an insight into a part of Phil's past we have never seen before.

While this in no way excuses Phil's behavior in the present... it certainly puts a whole lot of things into perspective and offers a really sobering insight into why he acts the way he does sometimes.

Dusty could you clear something up.
Joyce seems really close to phil and judith....so what happened to make them loose contact.
She seemed a big part of their life then just cut away.

Eh, I'm hesitant to assume Phil was beaten just from this conversation. It seems like we're rushing to connect the dots. When someone is abusive to a spouse it doesn't mean it's a free-for-all in the household. Some wife beaters have a bizarre moral compass where they wouldn't physically hurt their child until they become teen/young adult and then all bets are off. The kids get fucked up by it though even if they weren't the target. I'm being hesitant because Phil hasn't tried to capitalize on being regularly physically abused as a child, just a specific date he claims he was sexually abused. Now I'm more inclined to believe Phil that SOMETHING happened on that date but considering how Phil has difficulty with the truth I think we may never know for sure.

Yes, this is slightly depressing but this in no way justifies ADF's behavior. Lots of people come from even worse homes and have turned out much better than this sack of shit.
 
Joyce was Phil's mother's sister, correct?

I'm hesitant to believe all that considering she naturally would've taken her side in what all indications were a bitter divorce, so I'm a little doubtful if Phil wasn't coached about 7/4/97. It does make me pity Phil a bit that he got some sort of even worse Borb (all things being equal), but that's still no excuse for Phil's behavior now.

I think a lot of his behavior was learned from Deviantart. I think it was @Weeping With Pity who said that in college, Phil was fairly timid until he started getting friends online. Then he started to develop an edgelord 'accept me or get out' personality.
 
Has anyone ever thought to ask if Jackie wants to speak to joyce
They stopped speaking for a reason, she didnt leave a forwarding address or number and cut all contact with family.
She may have good reasons so we may not be doing her a favour here.
I know you have best intentions but thats always what leads to the mother of all fuck ups

From what I can tell from excessive autism from not only this thread but other threads, they're not related by blood. My friend tells his children that we are Uncle [power word] in order for his small, simple minded children know that we are people to be trusted over others because we are close family friends. When I see them, they say "UNCLE [FLOWERS]" even though we are in no way related, but they know they can trust me just by the word association. As far as I know, Joyce used to be really good friends with the Haskins-Delici family and was given the same privilege even though they're not really related.
 
Man poor Jackie. She had a husband that treated her like shit, a son that she loved that was too dysfunctional to be with them, and another son that beat her and continually treats her like an accessory of his delusional sob story of a life where he either praises her for being a good parent or talks down to her declaring that she was only "good" in the sense that she's better than the man who beat her. Seriously I feel bad that he came from a shitty home, but other than that I have no sympathy because of the way he treats his mother. Sure she isn't perfect, but God dammit she tried to give him the best life she could, and Phil continues to spit in her face for the dumbest bullshit.
