I've seen footage of cameras attached to outside cats and they do seem to meow and chitter at each other when no humans are around.

Hello yentlemen. I have some good news: Sick kitty has been on Renaltec for about ten days, over the course of which the smell of ammonia in her coat and on her breath has disappeared, she has stopped falling asleep and tumbling off her couch-armrest perches, and the food bowl has been quicker to empty suggesting more appetite. She seems more alert and may have some coat regrowth going on but both of those tbd, needs more observation.
Only downside is that I have to buy enough for both cats since they free-feed the same bowl ($$$$) but neither one has rejected the addition to the food.

@Athena Save Us! a genuine thank you for setting me on the track to discover this.
It's not the Dr. Toru you linked but I only found Renaltec when looking into that.

As you know, the renal-urinary system is the weakest link in cats, what you can do now, that your meowser is out of the woods: pursuade them to drink water:

* Feed them wet food with added water (I would actually stop buying dried food at this point, or at the very least get Iams low sodium food)
* Try an automatic cat water fountain.
* Place their water dish well away from their food bowl (as predators typically shun drinking water close to a "kill").
* Place several water dishes around your home.
* Try filtered or bottled water, your cat may dislike the chemicals in your mains that we don't mind, like chlorine, aluminium flocculant or even safe levels of metals found in your regional water level.
* Fill a bowl with ice cubes on warm days.
* Keep their body fat % at the ideal, more exercise, smaller meals 3x a day.
* If your cat is interested with a leaky drip in your bath or faucet, leave it dripping, they will play with it and get that tiny more fluids each day, feck the water bill.

These might sound trivial, but if your cat was a human, with their kind of levels, I would have them coming to my outpatients ward twice a week for a urinalysis, and if they didn't continue to improve, I would threaten to put them on an IV drip until they got 3.5 l of fluids into their body by 3pm every day.

Wishing your little friend and you the best of luck in their recovery. :feels:

Yay! So happy for you and your kitties. I haven't heard of Renaltec, but I'm going to check it out now so I can add it to my repertoire. It's nice that cat renal health is finally being looked into and taken care of in a serious manner.

These templates/patterns are listed as being for a "new long bodied cat."

I'm just warning you about the Future.

It's very cute. Perfect as a child's stuffy.

From what I can tell, reading the published studies on it, it works, and the science behind it is sound. It's based on the theory of microspheres of pyrolytic carbon that is subsequently etched with micropore channels that act like activated carbon. Interestingly, it's based very strongly on the same technology used to make the latest highly efficient carbon anodes for lithium-ion batteries but takes it a step further and implements the same idea in microspheres. There is no reason to think that there is any potential for major harm since it works very similarly to the principle of activated charcoal, and that has no toxicity because, just like RenalTec, it goes in one end and out the other without being absorbed.

For cats with severe renal impairment, I would try it without a doubt. However, I would suggest serial, monthly or bimonthly (every two months), CBC & Serum Chemistry for at least 6 months. Activated carbon is rather promiscuous. The micropore channels would limit its promiscuity, but it could easily bind essential ions inappropriately. As such, I would want to make sure that electrolytes are remaining within normal parameters. If not, that can be corrected easily with the augmentation of the sub-Q fluid administration.
