A story in 5 parts
Locomotive 91 023 at the front of the 12:10 Kings Cross to Leeds service on the 17th of October, 2000. A piece rail shattered underneath it as it passed over at a speed of 115mph, just south of Hatfield. 4 people sitting in the buffet coach (far right) would be killed after it was torn open by an overhead line stanchion.
Locomotive 91 023 at the rear of the 04:45 Newcastle to Kings Cross service, 4 months later on the 28th of February 2001. A driver asleep at the wheel of his Land Rover, towing a loaded car trailer, left the M62 Motorway near Selby, continued through a field and crashed onto the tracks. Shortly before 06:15, the Driving Van Trailer (cab car) would strike the wreckage, partially derail, and collide with a freight train 515 metres down the track, flattening the DVT and resulting in the deaths of 10 people, including both train drivers. The driver of the 1 month old freight loco died by drowning in mud. The troglodyte driving the Land Rover escaped the crash unharmed (but at least not unpunished).
On the 25th of July, 2000 improperly repaired wear strip would fall from the engine cowling of Continental flight 55. The Concorde would then run over this strip, causing the front right tyre to explode, sending debris into the port (lhs) wing, igniting the fuel inside. The Concorde would continue in flight for another 2 minutes before crashing into a hotel, killing all 109 souls and 4 people on the ground. All Concordes would be grounded after this to receive modifications to strengthen their fuel tanks, however, by the time they re-entered service in November 2001, the majority of their passengers had died 2 months prior in 9/11. The type would be retired just under 2 years later.

Following this, 91 023 was refurbished with the rest of the class and renumbered to 91 132. It became the first Class 91 to be scrapped in April 2021.

I recall seeing that on the news, and everybody was wondering what happened to cause those flames for the first few hours I recall someone on the news swearing up and down it had to be a Bird Strike.
It's a shame they canned them off they had the safest flight record of any aircraft that's ever flown before that crash.

The battle of the Aegates/Egati Islands was one of the last engagements of the First Punic War, where a fleet of 200 Roman ships defeated a Carthaginian navy made up of 250 ships burdened with supplies off the western coast of Sicily.
In 2010, the battle site was discovered by a fisherman. While the wooden hulls of the ships have long since rotten away, the bronze rams at the front of the ships survived.

Close up on the same ram's inscription, which lists the names of two quaestors (Roman public official in charge of finances). M(arco) Populicio L(ucii) f(ilio) and C̣(aio) Paperio Ti(berii) f(ilio). The former would be elected consul (the highest office in the Roman republic) a few years after the battle in 232 bc.

Discoveries at the site are still ongoing. In 2019, several Roman helmets were discovered on the ocean bottom.

And a heavily corroded Roman sword was discovered too.
Hundreds of amphorae were discovered surrounding the wreckage too, corroborating the ancient historian Polybius' account that the Carthaginian ships were overloaded with goods.

I'm not sure where they are now, but apparently the rams and helmets have been on display at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and, most appropriately, the ancient Temple of Romulus in Rome.
