It's not so much a story because he's in some super important position, but because he's (ostensibly) a conservative-leaning libertarian at an actual conservative thinktank (Manhattan Institute, home of Chris Rufo etc) and has worked across other right-ish institutions.
So whether he's a longtime subversive who just said enough lolberty things to get work at these places, or he's recently gone crazy, any organization that claims to be conservative and actually wants to move things rightward is going to have to disassociate with him, otherwise they'll just show themselves to be ConInc. controlled opposition.
