What do you guys make of it?

It looks way better than what they've got now. The characters look like they have a kind of generic style, but they look more real, not like the stiff cartoony look they've got now.

Shona looks like a real passing girl, and her chin isn't gigantic.

Betsy looks like she learned how to dress like a normal person.

Huey looks fine, and it doesn't look like they're trying too hard with his design by having his hair be three different colors with a ton piercings, like it is now.

And Cameron doesn't look like a sack of potatoes grew half a brain and became animate.

Why did they go away from this?

You know you've done something wrong when the concept art looks better than the final product.

What do you guys make of it?

The designs are less interesting to me because there's less silhouette variation and energy, but they are much more aesthetically pleasing than what they decided to roll with. I could see it being animated like nickelodeon's "Doug" or something like that.

I really wish they stuck with the face style from these early concepts, though. Aside from the Asian girl, all the characters faces creep me out in the trailer (especially the white guy's).

So how do they respond? By taking a completely unrelated tweet from that guy that was directed at an Onion article and using it out of context to essentially call the guy gay.

Tumblr hates it when characters are actually trans; they love forcing their "headcanons" onto cis characters and getting offended when somebody dares to insinuate otherwise. Actual trans characters means that they have nothing to play with - no stupid labels ("Shona's actually a non-dysphoric neuroqueer demigirl!!!") or identity politics.

It's basically a rough draft consisting of drawings, often synced to some early version of the sound. A bit more than a storyboard, but not much.
