they're very intelligent animals and about 8 billion have existed counting chimps, orangutans and bonobos. how smart were the smartest 1,000 of those? were there ever any chimps out there living a tortured existence in africa, unable to express their thoughts to the other monkeys?

I dont get it

Common schizo theory is they are 100% aware but know they'd have to pay taxes if they weren't living in the woods naked.
That or they're just small people in costumes.
chimps are randomly violent
Nah it's not random they either just hate you or find it funny to rip your fingers off

I’m sure I’ve read that of all the sign language gorillas and chimps, none has ever asked a question.
They’re mainly sentient, whether they are sapient is another matter. Perhaps the question is how their sapience differs from ours.
I watched one of my cats learn how to open press-n-seal packs today. Previously I’d told him off for chewing through the bag of dreamies, as of now he just opens it. He has also figured out Tupperware. Crows are pretty smart too.
Having said all that, I dont think some humans are sapient either.

interesting distinction. there are some chimps who are better puzzle solvers than humans but how do you describe what makes us special
Oh, you can describe it for days, there's so much to say.

For example, we are, as far as we're aware at least, we're the only species that has the ability to contemplate it's own existence.
We're capable of meta thoughts, we can think about thinking.
Then of course there's the written language and with it, the ability to pass on really complex things to future generations which can improve upon it and pass on an upgraded version even further.

When it comes to puzzle solving, we can have one smart human solve it and then, we can pass on the knowledge of how to solve it to everyone else.
For example, you don't need to figure out how to solve the rubix cube, you can look up a detailed tutorial made by someone who figured it out before you, making it really easy.

We are a unique species and many things make us special.

Sadly, no, this has never happened.
Most of the times people thought it has happened was just the handler grifting.
Monkeys are smart, but they're not smart in the same way we are.

There was an African Gray Parrot that showed signs of self-awareness though.
