That's a fair point to think about. Let's assume the density of civilian NPCs are majority African-American or Hispanic. Theoretically speaking, there's practically no failsafe to stop players from committing (virtual) vehicular manslaughter to their heart's content. I mean, fair, but you could buy used and Sonic's fanbase has always been... Well y'know... A few fanbases just took whatever bad business practices the company would throw at them. Sims fanbase was another one. You also weren't dropping a month's rent on a new console. And piracy was fairly easy to access, even then. Most video stores would chip your console and sell you pirated games for a fraction of the price. Shit, you could even buy pirated games and movies on the street where I'm from.

Even if you were risk averse, milquetoast and described as "Sensible" by all your peers, you could just rent it. Shit, a lot of the time, up to PS3 times, when supposedly you needed fresh codes to play online because they were trying to crack down on the used games market, you could buy used, and it would still fully work online.

I see this take very often and I think it's kinda surface level. We're talking about a hobby where you could straight up play an entire fucking game, for free, at a mall's expo PS2. I played both Headhunters, Halo, Airblade and a Hitman that way without paying a cent. Arcades also meant that you could play an entire fucking game for literal peanuts. Granted you would need to practice a lot to get to that point, but I've seen 2 hour sessions of Crazy Taxi. A lot of people could 1 CC light gun games, too.

It really depended on the environment, sure, but gaming, when done well by the people in charge, can be incredibly cost efficient. It's a less physically active sport, pretty much. Chess, cards or board games are even cheaper, arguably, but you couldn't get much more of a bargain than potentially cents for hours of entertainment if you were an arcade rat. I still play a few PS1 and PS2 games regularly, that I bought used in the 90's and 00's, for less than the cost of a pizza and a movie.

Essentially, games are like books meet chess. You can get endless entertainment out of the ones you really love, literally endless. Sure, the story will never change, but if you like the gameplay, you can just play the same thing as much as you like.

Fuck, if that was a bad strategy they wouldn't be reselling us the same games with graphics upgrades and updated mechanics over and over and over, now would they?

TL;DR: All in all gaming is SOMEWHAT more expensive than just watching whatever's on TV, but if you looked for deals or hustled a little bit it was quite literally one of the greatest value and bang for your buck hobbies you could engage in by FAR. Companies trying to pull some clever shit is a fairly recent development.

If you factor in piracy, potato PCs and emulation, you can very comfortably game for the respectable price of fucking nothing, sticking to only very good games for the rest of your life and never be done with even a single console's full catalogue. I will agree that it requires some tech know-how, but again, it's only filtering the DSPs of the world. Which you could argue are a big chunk of modern day gamers, and I wouldn't even be able to disagree

Gaming can very much be a poverty compatible hobby. There really aren't many others that beat it, unless it's some hardcore poverty shit, like reading only what you bum/steal by candlelight because your lights are out, or reading at the public library. Come to think of it, they sometimes have vidya at the library nowadays, so again, you can play stuff all the way through for free.

EDIT: There’s a dude on this very site who has dilligently collected Timmy Tencent’s free games for like a decade and he’s got 700 motherfucking F R E E games just sitting on his library that he’s presumably never even gonna get to play and they’re not even all slop.

Seriously, going immediately from III and VC to this is honestly stunning in terms of how much better and polished everything about it is. Not to mention all the things you can now interact with and the like. The roots of my favorite Rockstar game so far (RDR2) I can see clearly in SA.

As hobbies go, gaming is pretty darn cheap. I might be a bit insulated because I need to have a good GPU for work, but when I added up my entire steam library which has been active since 2004, I think the total was around $2500. That's a hobby I've put more hours into than I care to admit for over 20 years. I can think of like 5 other hobbies off the top of my head that cost me way more, and that I spent way less time enjoying.

Good to know. My hopes for the game are not exactly high, it's certainly going to be nowhere near as good compared to SA and IV, but I am hoping it's going to be on par with V.
