Kiwi lawyers please enlighten me, is there a limit to how many continuances Chris' case can receive before a judge has to make a verdict? Or can the state of Virginia just bounce him back and forth between a jail cell and a court room till he dies?

If the latest continuance is another 3 months by the time may rolls around it'll be either shit or get off the pot. Because if he sends a year in jail without a verdict, trial or deal being reached then they'll have to dismiss the case and Chris walks free like that.

They don't have to dismiss the case. They have the option of freeing Chris and continuing the case, they just can't keep him in jail for longer than the maximum punishment (though they can of course throw him back in jail if he reoffends for some other crime, including failure to appear at court dates).

And the other option is to turn the charge into a felony and change courts, which they are free to do at any time, which for a Class 5 felony sets the max sentence at ten years. They just don't seem to want to, or they would have done it already.

UPDATE: Chris is getting another continuance. There is no date yet. They were unable to give me the case number or state the nature of the case.
(I miss the nice lady from this morning).
I will call tomorrow to see if I can find us a date! Until then, looks like he's stuck in a cell unless he gets the portal working.

Damn it! At this rate we'll be lucky if it goes to trial some time this century if at all. But more importantly, is there a limit for how many continuances a trial can have or can you get an infinite amount?

Pointless Sperg has answered well. At some point, Chris' attorney, if he were incompetent, could try to file a habeas corpus writ. Habeas corpus is Latin for "Get my client's fat ass out here, you slowpokes, you can't lock him up forever." But such a writ really only applies when a person is being held illegally, which Chris isn't.
