Youtbe AI will retroactively punish you when new rules are created.
Same as it ever was.
Most normies into guns are going to watch on their TV.
And that's the other HUGE reason why alternative video sites don't work out. Youtube comes standard on your phone and TV as an app, normies and gen alphas watch on those two devices.
Bitchute (terrible)
I like Bitchute purely because it's basically a free version of Patreon where older more controversial stuff from a couple creators that I like gets reuploaded there after youtube poopoos them for being naughty.
YouTube viewers not looking at their subscriptions and only looking at the home page feed is a major reason why sub counts to actual views drop off so heavily. There’s a constant refrain from subscribers “I don’t see your content anymore” in the comments sections across channels.

Most people doing YouTube should keep it as a hobby.

The people doing it as a career need multiple revenue streams. Ian does have that between books and other things he’s doing.
How do you use a glue stick? Inquiring minds wish to know.

Garand "Talk is cheap, ammunition is expensive" Thumb has published a video on his more treasured guns from the collection, featuring a Colt Monitor he had converted from an Ohio Ordnance A2 totaling about $15,000.

Youtube has changed significantly in the past few years and few seem to understand how or why.

If you look at the surface, it seems our numbers are down wildly. However support is stable. This means our core group has largely been retained and likely has grown approximate to loss.

The reason views are a mess is because platforms like tiktok robbed what would have been the next adult generation, short format viewer. Previously bored teens would browse YT and just consume 30 seconds of various videos. Previews were not available, AI summaries not available. They would scrub though videos for a few seconds. That still counted as a view. My views are way down but my watch time is way up on standard videos.

Then YT decided to split their own platform with shorts, which were implemented poorly at first. Shorts became the only real growth vector for about a year there. This was awful bc established viewers hated them in their feed. The dust is finally settled, but we had a minor exodus during their introduction.

Now my subscriber count is a mess. A lot of it is legacy viewers who wanted my videos on their homepage (surprise, they aren't) but a growing number are shorts consumers who subscribed just to increase the likelihood that I show in their bored scrolling. This split approach is frankly nightmarish for a long format production like us. Just as a means of panning for new, real viewers I now have this other part time job.

Given the comments, I now have a significant audience that doesn't even realize we are making documentaries at all. Any attempt to alert them smells of internal advertising and many people have developed a sort of ad-amnesia as their brains have learned to just filter out non-core information due to all the existing spam out there.

Take all of that and pair it with YT algorithm BS and it's favoritism towards children's content (because they watch more and click things on accident, which then means ad rev for YT) and you can see guntube spiralling already.

Now add in constant censorship that forces a new wave of guntuber 1337 speak, removing instructionals, and demonetizing anything actually interesting to watch. This forces the content into a narrower and therefore less interesting template while making the presenter sound like he is babbling at babies while avoiding no no words. Even if the speech is done well, it is a constant reminder you are listening to a weak man afraid of losing money and respect drops accordingly.

Someone starting a firearms centered YT channel today with the intention of making it a "career" would be a fool. You can't show or even talk about anything interesting, and even the channels that stay purely in the realm of entertainment are constantly walking on eggshells. Even as a casual side hustle, it seems far more trouble than it's worth now.

You can't say certain words, can't mention prices, website addresses or discount codes. Hell, I've noticed an increasing number of videos where gunshots are covered up with sound effects because apparently YT's demonetization algo can detect full auto and FRT gunfire. I guess Donut Operator was ahead of the curve, because he's been covering up gunshot sounds with ducks quacking for years now.

Remember when you suddenly couldn't show a suppressor being attached to a firearm? Or show "high capacity" magazines, which lead to everyone "joking" about their 30+ round mags being CA compliant 10 rounders? Is that stuff still a thing?

Look at how bad the true crime channels have it, where they can't say normal words like kill, murder, death, dead, suicide, rape, sexual assault, etc., leading to all these incredibly gay cover words and euphemisms. Will guntubers start exclusively calling them "pews" and "rooty tooty point and shooties" if saying "guns" or "firearms" results in a video's demonetization? Going to refer to ammo/bullets as "freedom seeds"? How much will guntubers allow YT to humiliate them before all firearms related content finally gets banned from YT anyway?

So many gun channels get nuked off YT these days that I can't even remember all the ones that got got in the past year. Off the top of my head, Primary and Secondary, Milspec Mojo, and Kinetic Consulting had their channels unceremoniously wiped without warning. I hear about many more who suddenly get 2 strikes with a third on the way if they don't frantically play a guessing game trying to figure out what content in their videos triggered YT's censorship AI so they can delete any videos that might result in a third strike and channel nuke.

For some reason people still think YT banning videos about real firearms is very unlikely, but there will come a day when even the kind of neutered and sterile videos Jonathan Ferguson of Royal Armouries makes will be too much for YT.

Inrangetv has 939k subscribers - Karl released a Q and A video 4 or 5 days ago that has 11k views. Those are abysmal numbers; in this case, it’s easy to understand why (Karl) the channel has largely tanked.
I can't help but wonder how many of those 939k subs are bots. I suspect that the number of real subscribers is far closer to 11k than 939k.

Ian personally told me during our lunch with Bigfoot he's planning on underwater basket weaving full time on his scuba channel if FW gets got

When this popped up in my feed I was worried that Nutn had died. For all his faults he was a big part of my early interest in firearms and I will be sad when he does finally pass.
I thought the same as both Brass Facts and Hop put out a video about him at the same time. Though there was this comment posted under Brass Fact's video.

"Jesus, I was worried this was a video in memoriam of Nutn. Then I clicked on his channel, saw his view counts, and yeah this pretty much is."

Is it any surprise, though? Look a few pages back at the AI slop he's peddling on his Patreon to sell a knife. I know people remember Nutn fondly and he still has his diehard fans, but he's lost all relevancy in the modern guntube space, and the only reason many of the younger guntube viewers even know he exists is due to BF and Hop referencing him occasionally.

I started watching him for his knife reviews -- guns being virtually impossible here in the UK -- but I quickly got sucked into the gun content, and to his philosophy videos. Though he seemed something of a kook, I always learned interesting stuff from his long-form videos.

I stopped watching when he started making his kids 'part of the cast'. It's one thing to pay your kid to do some editing or gofer work. But if you think the force of your personality is sufficient to make stars out of your children -- you're a moron. (This was also true of Hickock45 and his son John. John was fine behind the camera and doing the editing. Stick him in front of the camera and he was terrible.)

Don't put your children on the stage, Mr Guntuber.
Don't put your children on the stage,
The profession is overcrowded,
The struggle is pretty tough,
And admitting the fact he's burning to act,
That isn't quite enough...

Interesting video about Nutnfancy, talking about what he was, what he is, and even addressing his (and i quote) "bit of a lolcow status".

https://youtube.com/watch?v=961GDnCP0Rc
I used to watch Nutn back in the day, I thought he was dumb and unobjective back then before I even bought a gun. I've already talked about before and I'm not going to do it again.

I watched both Hop's and Brassfact's video. Hop really came off as genuine appreciation while not even thinking once about Nutn's many, many flaws. For once, I can appreciate BrassFact's video over Hop's because he at least talked about Nutn being a lolcow. At the risk of sounding like Null when he thought that webcomic writer in Calgary was explicitly creating comics that catered to him. I really do feel like Brassfacts read the thread concerning Nutn and himself. Especially when they talked about him rucking and the survival stuff that I accused Brassfacts being a poser about. Brassfacts showed clips of him actually doing survival stuff.

I'm not going to nitpick's Hop video but I take exception to one thing he said early on. He went on about Nutn was the one advocating body armor and tactical gear for civilians. This is only half true. Nutn definitely talked tactical gear but at least in 2009 he was shilling shitty Blackhawk tactical vests as his "Sheepdog" kit. He had that dumb vest with the integrated crossdraw holster he shoved his G23 in. He was also dead set against body armor for civilians. Maybe he changed his mind later on but I don't want him getting credit for this when body armor for civilians was in its infancy.
