Once Linux gets full NVidia and HDMI 2.1+ support, there will be no stopping it from becoming the next big gaming OS, even if it may boil down to just one distro — SteamOS — taking a major share.
It is obvious that one wealthy, specialized company needs to make the necessary steps because the fragmented community will never manage to do so. They will implement Valve's solutions, though, so there will be not fewer but more great choices going forward.

Honestly, I can't see it lasting past 2027, the problem, as you said, is that the whole US economy has become a war economy in the sense that they decided to divert the whole power and water supplies to feeding the AI frenzy, and when shit becomes unsustainable in a war economy because the war isn't won, the whole country's economy goes under instantaneously, and we'll probably have an even worse 2007 global crisis if that happens, since the whole world's economy is based on whatever happens in the US.
You know, we may have rolling blackouts at home, but the water rationing isn't too bad - i get to shower and drink every other day which really isn't bad once you get used to it. and yeah, all of our automotive plants and other manufacturing have been taken offline to send power to the national River Rouge Data Plant where the us federal government is iterating its latest warminds and tokamak reactor modelers, but we're building an economy for the future.
