"Kangaroo" was actually an MS Office fuckup. Older versions didn't have "Ragnarok" in the dictionary and it was accidentally "corrected" in a lazy proofreading session.

The story is pretty good, decent twists with Kain's betrayal and an interesting drama between him, Cecil, and Rosa in that love triangle. There was also Tellah and Edward's conflict, and the connection between Rydia's village disaster and Cecil & Kain with the guilt Cecil feels. You don't see much in the way of complicated relationships between party members in most RPGs before or after FF4 imo.
It's not completely absent, but there's generally not as much even in other Final Fantasy games. There's a mild bit of resentment between Wakka and Riku because he's racist, but that's not really much. Cloud was sort of a loner so Barret was kind of a dick to him for not being all-in with his cause in the beginning, but these things weren't prominent interparty complications.
Chrono Trigger is kind of an exception, you can kill Magus so that counts for something, but otherwise once he joins your party he's pretty much one of your crew and it's all water under the bridge.

I wholly disagree the quality and faithfullness of a translation should suffer on the mere assumption that the content is kid-friendly. I also don't like this concept of children unable to handle the idea there are different cultures existing beyond their own, or remotely serious themes, as if they were nothing but dumb.
In the case of the Dragon Quest franchise, it's virtually impossible to try discussing the games with english-speaking users on the same radiowave, as the changes are far too recurrent (between characters names, attacks, whole lines of dialogues, etc.).

Am I correct in assuming that these script changes were not mentioned anywhere in the update notes and were just snuck in thinking nobody was going to notice?

I've been planning to get the japanese Switch version one day, which came out in late April, and check if the change in the english script is also there. But I'm also wondering if the remastered version lost a bunch of store/ads licenses, just like for the remaster of Akiba's Trip 1 Plus (in 2021), and if XSEED also applied those changes for the old Steam version.
Which is kinda sad because the Akiba's Trip games were time capsules of how Akihabara looked like in the early 2010's. Now, if you were to check at the front of the train station for instance, SEGA is no longer there after retiring itself from the arcade market a year ago.
The spin-off Akiba's Beat (which was an actual kusoge that flopped massively in Japan) really fucked up the localization company when they wasted a massive amount of money on the BIGGEST DUB EVER. Tom also had a fight with the higher-ups because of a fictional group called KKK Witches present in the game, leading him to have his name removed from the credits as he left the team soon after.

I think Marvelous might just swap over to AI and have Koreans/Filipinos do the editing, their English is pretty much on par with - or even surpasses - these morons anyways, might keep XSeed strictly for distribution. Cheaper in the long run.

I'll defend Excalipurr, but not Shogum. Only so many ways you can do "Sword Cat" (I am exaggerating here) in a pithy way in English.

Holy shit. The memories of walking into the area and walking to top floors of porn shops as they looked like the darkest corners of Sodom and Gomorrah. That's where I picked up Suigetsu and Nekromantik. Even the most vanilla shops have a porn section (which is anywhere in Tokyo). Mandarake having framed 80s lewd loli pictures. (I kid you not). Even people who say loli is bad make loli games there (and one decided to translate an entire game of it with Google translate (which is Sayonara o Oshiete)). It was a mess but I loved the shops that sold old games and manga with extremely old antique ones selling for thousands of dollars displayed right next to Cream Lemon vinyls.
I reconsidered liking Anime a mere month after going there but works like Attack on Titan do convince me there are still good anime out there. But neoliberal overexpansion proved translation and localization worked poorly because they didn't like the idea of Nikola Tesla giving the masses free energy which in turn would give them better technological potential. Because up until now, Foreigners can only get the impression of books such as Ringo Monogatari and Japanese Super Sentei Games through pictures and pixels alone.

This is one of the things I wonder about as well. Not just with this game, but Yakuza and others. One of the major flaws with digital games is removing content as licenses expire.

swordy cat, blade cat, neko sword, pick any of the subspecies of cats like "combative cornish rex", go full latin (which works in every language) like "gladius felis" or whatever. if if just a run of the mill mob sometimes a cat with a sword is just "sword cat". no one cares.
english is a descriptive language, it literally has characters that are called little red riding hood, sleeping beauty and snow white....

Right, but then someone would bitch that it's not Demon Sword God Leopard, which is the literal translation. It's a superboss.
I personally could have been talked into Kensei Kitty. Or perhaps Kittensei.
For the record, the other thing I listed is what you probably know as Omnislash. It's Japanese name is something kind of like Super Ultimate War God Champion Slash.
There's just some things that have to be localized in some way, because they sound like shit to say aloud in English. So they picked the most famous sword basically ever and slapped a punny cat name at the end. It's not entirely unreasonable.

to be fair people quoting weird anime special attacks already, names like that have long been part of the culture.
demon sword god leopard sounds weeb as fuck which already makes it 10/10.
but really, that's how japan names their stuff, so might as well translate it literally. but then I'm a purist who likes to keep stuff as close to the original as possible (however good or bad).
the only issue is really that most textboxes are simply not set up for turning 6 moonrunes into half a sentence...

Japanese developers have an unfortunate tendency of not thinking ahead that their games might get localized and simply don't make the UI flexible enough to do it.

I draw the line between how important the name is to how awful it might sound in English.
I hear the name "Demon Sword God Leopard" and unless it's a final boss or some ULTIMATE SUPER BOSS who you only fight once, who name is re;vent to him and not just some throwaway name, I think it be fine to keep. But if it's just some throw away boss who a recolor and has no real plot relevance I think it's fine to change it to something better sounding in English to go with the rest of the renames in the game.
I think my favorite line of monster renames in this game are.
