Curiously the 7-1 Brazil game was what brought me back to international football. My 2006 trauma was so great that I didn't watch any game from 2006 to 2014 and the only Brazil game that I watched that cup was the 7-1 only because I was drinking with friends. I remember laughing with the 3x0 and it wasn't shocking to me. After that I realized that no matter what happened, It couldn't be worse so I started watching it again.

Now the 2023-2025 campaign in the south america qualifiers is my personal 7-1, mainly the 4-1 against Argentina on April 25, 2025 that makes me seethe

Why are the Czech Republic now being called ‘Czechia’ everywhere? Are they not a Republic any more? Isn’t it traditional for English speakers to say the English word for a country, not some ridiculous French-German sounding mangling of a country’s name? Germany aren’t referred to as Deutschland in our game commentary, so why Czechia?

Also, I need your hive mind input. Ben Gannon-Doak - the commentator I listened to last night pronounced the last bit of his surname as ‘doe-ack’. Wtf? Is it not ‘Doak’ that rhymes with poke and boak?

Also also, that ref was fucking terrible.

It's because around 2020, we accepted we're not going to figure out a better one word name for the country, so Czechia/Česko is acceptable even in formal contexts now. The only ones really opposed were Moravian nationalists and that's a very fringe group. And it's not a super new word, since Čechie was sometimes used as translation of Bohemia in the 19th century.
 
I forgot to write another post after America won 4-1; that was a great game, and I will say I like the "hydration breaks" because they give me time to pee. I'm not a huge soccer guy, so I'm not going to be watching Nigeria vs. Zimbabwe or whoever is playing, but I just tuned into Japan's game at Jerry World, and I hope they win because they call "football" soccer, but I'm rooting for America to win the World Cup.

And their training camp is in a ghetto shithole part of town. I was laughing at the AirBnB listings nearby.
 
I was going to comment a few things on the Netherlands v Japan game but I would rather take a step back before the Ivory Coast v Ecuador game. The first 2 games today have shown that 32 teams should have been in this tournament instead of 48. We should be in a spot where a bunch of teams who could have been in the World Cup didn't make it and we get tons of games like the Netherlands v Japan. This result should have meant something but it won't because there is a better than not chance a 3rd place team from this group will advance. And just to prove my point, I had to hear Landon Donavan talk about how its a good thing 48 teams are in the World Cup as Germany scored their 5th goal of the game against a team of players from the second division of Greece and Miami FC (not Inter Miami, Miami FC of the USL). The tournament won't really get started until the final round when we can see who potentially might not make the next round and a 3rd place team, the rest of the games are basically exhibitions
 
I think we were all wrong about curaçao. they were just unlucky that germany had to prove something.
They are the 2nd best team in the group. Ivory coast is horrible and Ecudador cant hit the goal- curaçao played much better than both.
 
Cote d'ivoire and equador must be one of the most baffling matches so far. These niggas run like the fucking demon but couldn't shoot for shit. Then 90 minutes hit and we are saved from the first 0-0 of the tournament.

Also months after seeing Enner Valencia... He is still Enner Falência for sure.
