I think it's time to label this Locally Sourced. Too many salty people upset they can't make poor people just eat beans.

Yeah, that's totally what it is, it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that humans, being an animal, need an incentive or else will happily languish in whatever economic strata they find themselves in, as long as they're capable of getting all of the rewards with none of the effort. The concept of a gilded cage does not exist, nor is part of this argument at all. Nope, nosiree.

"Get back on your feet" implies you're talking about people who've lost their job and have temporarily fallen on hard times, but a lot of Americans grew up poor to parents who grew up poor. Their families are in the same situation and they live near other people like themselves, so the churches they go to can't provide everyone with enough food because they can't afford it. What should be done about those people? They're going to be on food stamps forever unless something changes dramatically. You can't just say 'get a job', because that clearly hasn't worked very well.

It's not a complete fix, but if you're lucky enough to have a food pantry that's where poor families would go of course. At least that's what my neighborhood does. It's kind of common knowledge here. Sign up to a pantry and go there every month.

I think an interesting solution, at least for those who have no disability issues, is the switzerland model: when you're in welfare you have to look for jobs and certificate you are looking for them (you get signed by agencies that you tried to get assumed by them, in tl;dr), and in long terms you have to do obligatory charity work.

There would be so much salt if Americans on welfare who aren't disabled were forced to work sometimes, tbh.

That's actually being put into effect here. In my state you have to work 40hrs a month and take an employment skills class to recieve your benefits unless you have a medical excuse.

But there's plenty of people who are on welfare who also have jobs. And the type of jobs someone on welfare is likely to be able to get are also the kind that don't pay enough to get off welfare. I'm not sure this would help.

Core of the issue is the government has to have some direct control over these things. Citizens as a whole are like retarded children. You gotta guide them

That's a damn good start to reforming the system, if only we could have that done on a federal level.

Well if we cut it back to the bare essentials, the problem might solve itself, considering people having more kids when they're already on EBT might have something to do with the fact that it's no biggie to just get practically whatever luxury food you want, right up to fucking pizza, and the govt gives you more EBT bux the more kids you have.

This is a huge thing people seem to not grasp. While clinging tightly to their welfare queen with a ferrari, 10 kids and *gasp* PIZZA, they don't realize a large percentage of people who get these benefits actually have jobs and work, but the jobs they have a menial and don't pay enough for them to live without assistance.

Most food stamp recipients do. In fact, in 2012 more than 47.8 percent of families receiving food stamp were working (the highest ever), and only 13.2 percent were welfare recipients with no working adults, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

I mean, Walmart came under fire a few years ago for handing out pamphlets teaching their employees how to apply for food stamps.

:powerlevel:This is exactly why my mom didn't stay on food stamps or welfare, tbh. She made more money on tips from waitressing and would have been fucked over on welfare since her hours would have screwed over my family.:powerlevel:

What exactly is wrong with food boxes?
Aside from the fact that the poor would no longer be able to spend money/trade as they please - which they have no right to do - what's wrong with providing staples?

Because managing food is harder than managing money. You can't just drop off a single box of food a month.. it's a weekly thing because stuff spoils.

Pretty sure it'd also be more expensive because of all of the management, state employees and intense micromanagement that such a program would require.

I know this may hurt some progressive feefees, but it's not some kind of human right to eat whatever shit you like.
You eat to survive and make the best out of what you have. :story: This is why you're all fucking fat.

Your argument is pretty much all emotion based...

Not even close. It's actually pretty much the norm from what I've seen.

Well at least the thread title is possibly the most accurate I've seen on this site so far.
