yea I was exaggerating, my point is Aerith is way more the type of Girl Tifa looks like she'd be, and Tifa is the awe shucks country girl who only has ever thought about Cloud ever.
I still disagree. Maybe we're desensitized to it but Tifa wears less than the HoneyBee girls do. That's not a reasonable proxy for Aerith's personality. And she joined a terror cell.
It's literally just Aerith is like a cliche tomboy-- outgoing, streetwise, wearing whatever doesn't clash even if it's improvised and un-self-conscious.
Tifa is like a cliche well-behaved girl-- compliant, quite image-conscious and interested in domesticable things like clothes
But both have their foibles like Tifa knowing how to drive automobiles and Aerith being a gardener and orphan-minder.
The mistake as I see it is defining them as contrasts. But they weren't even designed at the same time and their roles in the story were decided in advance of any finer character-work.
Ergo, in most ways,Aerith and Tifa aren't different/delineated enough to be clearly juxtaposed. Asuka and Rei are genuine opposite personalities but the differences between Aerith and Tifa are Tifa being in the Top .1% of Agreeability while Aerith is "only" in the Top 1%
And there's the fact they're not of equal importance so comparing them as Equal-Opposites has to occur in a vacuum. Because the story is pretty clear that Aerith's moxie is a more helpful trait when it really counts. Even her having another love interest ends up being a bonus because it lets her see how Cloud's fake persona is psychologically inconsistent back in Disc 1.
I would have pegged Tifa as a Fallen Aw Shucks Country Girl but honestly her personality pre-Nibelheim Incident is pretty opaque. Partly because it's always filtered through memory and also because Square keeps changing their minds. And sometimes they clearly make mistakes like having Tifa throw a small tantrum half an hour after one of the Shinra guards died on the trip (Rebirth obviously). Then there's things like how she dresses like a cowboy that one time, but she actually has a diverse array of outfits so it's probably more just her liking clothes and dressing-up than her just being "country". So kind of a normal girl whose dad paid for a lot of extracurriculars and whose life was upset by something real bad that toughened her up.
Whereas Aerith's life was terrible near the start, but for Ifalna giving everything for them to be free, and so freedom/kindness are what matter in her mind.
Both girls can be described by their respective moments of revelation/change. Things got worse for Tifa so she tries to look tougher/cooler while things got better for Aerith so she's non-fussed about it and wears a doily.
