I think that avant garde fashion is rarely made to be worn outside of a fashion show or a red carpet.
I look at it more as an expression of creativity and the possibility to craft a piece of "clothing" from a wild scetch. As with all art you get a range of designs, from hideous to interesting to stunning.

I can appreciate avant garde fashion that's not specifically trying to be wearable, and I'll note that a lot of these are apparently handmade to a high standard with good quality materials, but the overall effect is eye searingly bad. Very occasionally some of this stuff can look good when worn by the right person in the right context, like one of the singers out of BlackPink -

I used to be friends with an autistic gay guy back when I worked at a warehouse and the guy had some of the worst fashion sense. In particular he was obsessed with Sanrio and kept buying these hideous cardigans from Hot Topic.

These probably wouldn't look too bad on the alternative female demographic they're directed at but he was a tall overweight man, so that definitely didn't do him any favors.

Most of my disdain for these cardigans is personal. My friend had a great heart, but just imagine the constant embarrassment of getting lunch with the massive 6'4 hispanic guy dressed up in "cute" clothing. He always looked out of place.

Oh I totally agree there is a time, place and upper age limit for these pieces, I would probably shrivel and die of second hand embarrassment in your particular scenario.

This reminds me of the time us kids all went to a Denny's-like restaurant and I was wearing short-shorts and my butt got stuck to the fake leather booth as I was scooting out and I spent the next half hour walking around downtown being unconvinced when my friends told me no, no one could see any marks on my ass.

This shirt really encapsulates that experience.
