Why would it move anything?

200k people each spending 100 bucks a year is 20 million dollars. 400 devs with a average cost of 200k a year is 80 million dollars.

This is simple math. They are continuing Marathon because they sold battle passes and other live service bullshit and it gets potentially legally troublesome if they immediately yank it away.

Make no mistake the new jeet leader is a hospice care manager there to extract what value can be had for the dying patient. But it will die.
Destiny is fully capable of making fuck tons of money, though. Renegades sold like hotcakes during the last update, it was a top seller for a week straight. I understand it’s math, and don’t get me wrong, I’m not an emotional bleeding heart fag; I know they need to cut fat from Bungie. But why not invest into the company a little more? Cut salary’s, cut the DEI hires, move the studio to somewhere like Austin or Nevada where it would be cheaper to maintain the building and work force, like do anything but kill the goddamn game man. Which, is optimistic of me to even think. Sony has been gutting studios, same as Microsoft, for a few years now. EA was the trailblazer in this. It’s been estimated that in the past 12 years, the Destiny franchise has made 2-3 billion dollars. To flush that down the drain instead of trying to figure it out makes no sense to me.

All the evidence was that it was not great. Its highest peak players was 70k on Steam. Lightfall was 300k. Lower than it is right now. We know 200k spending 100 isnt enough. Yes the Playstation players blah blah. We have no idea if that trend line stayed true post final shape when the console casual audience would be most likely to bail. Either way it shows the trendline was sharply down.

But the hardcore Destiny community was all moving to PC as the game was easier on that platform.

At the end of the day Bungies rulers were all based in Washington and would never leave that area. Mega libshits would never fire DEI hires, would never move to a red state, and were completely insulated. Parsons and Jones were rich and are still rich. Both get to blame Sony. They get to exit as victims to people pre disposed to like them. Parsons less so. But why should he care again?

Nothing we did moved the needle? Nothing?
No, of course it didn't. You aren't the audience. The investors were. The needle was pegged at its desired position (for this outcome) well in advance. Nobody who authored the Bungie sale to Sony expected any other outcome. They knew they were selling bullshit to Sony and this is the highly-predictable result. Golden parachutes were donned and deployed months ago.

Not under Bungie's leadership/direction. For every dollar Destiny generated, Bungie spent 3.
But why not invest into the company a little more?
Sony did, nothing changed. Maybe Bungie should have invested some of the money Destiny made back into Destiny instead of infinite "incubation" projects.
It’s been estimated that in the past 12 years, the Destiny franchise has made 2-3 billion dollars.
Sony paid 3.6 billion to acquire them, with one pen stroke. 12 years to make ROI on the investment that was Bungie was definitely not part of that deal and if Sony knew that before hand they wouldn't have agreed to it.
To flush that down the drain instead of trying to figure it out makes no sense to me.
It didn't make sense to Sony either, which is why they acquired them. Bungie was literally broke and weeks/months away from shuttering before the Sony acquisition. Sony was only willing to aquire them because they saw what you are seeing and Bungie had wicked good board room pillow talk.
>Massive game
>Massive playerbase
>Senior talent
>Should be a money printer
>It's about to shutter
>"Who just throws out a money printer?"
>Buys Bungie and their "money printer"

By all metrics Destiny should print money. It should be one of the most profitable games OOT. But time and time again it's proven that the issue isn't Destiny, it's Bungie and their insatiable(retarded) appetite for cash due to a bad "setting money on fire for fun" addiction(infinity incubation projects).

Sony chopping Bungie down at the knees actually gives Destiny a better chance at survival. Now it might have a chance to get picked up by a competent studio who will treat it with care instead of treating it like a side gig.

So the rot does come from the heart of the black garden. My desire for Bungie to burn to the fucking ground has just intensified immeasurably.
Yes, Jason is genuinely a piece of shit and evil human and the day he finally breathes his last is a day I’ll celebrate with jubilation.

Genuinely, fuck Jason Jones. I pray to the almighty that nothing but pain comes for him the remainder of his days.

It's not capable of making fucktons of money though.

There's no path forward for Destiny 2 that would result in any worthwhile amount of revenue. Destiny 3 would be years away if it's already been started the moment that Marathon went out the door. You don't need half the people at the studio for early game development(this is why studios used to release more than one game every 5-10 years and overlap projects to avoid brain drain).

Investing into the company? Sony already bought them for over 3.5 or 3.6 billion dollars, and then spent more money expanding the studio apparently. Cut salaries and people will leave. Cut executive salaries, and that won't amount to much overall.

Even if they could shit out Destiny 3 in 2030(which is only 3.5 years out btw so 2032 would be a more reasonable timeframe), that's still a massive studio that needs to stay operational while making the game. Trying to wring that amount of money in the form of mtx from the remaining destiny 2 playerbase, without spending more money on destiny 2 to even do that is just a non-starter. This company was fucked the moment they decided to dedicate their entire new project development to Marathon, and releasing another destiny 2 expansion to an ever shrinking player-base wouldn't fix that.

Sure, the destiny 2 player count shot up with the last update, but that's only temporary and the moment they add a price tag to that it'll fall again.

What they SHOULD have done, was start destiny 3 development years ago, and then also do marathon along-side that as a side project to eliminate the need for a half decade minimum between future game releases.

The big game studios and publishers have been spending the past 15 years doing an incredibly stupid thing, of the opposite of diversifying their portfolios.

Look at Rockstar. 13 years since GTA5, and all they released was RDR2 and then killed the multiplayer for it within a year by doing nothing with it. Meanwhile in the 13 years before GTA5, they released well over a dozen games(including multiple GTA games) developed on their own(not including games they published but were made by other studios). Ubisoft releases what, 3-5 games a year now? Same with EA outside of their sports games? These are publishers and studios that got big by releasing a shitload of games, some flopped of course but some were actually good and more than made up for the failures. Now it's studios and publishers going all in on as few games as possible hoping that the hundreds of millions they spend on those games will turn into billion dollar successes. It's like the big game industry is fucking itself the opposite way of what happened with the 80s crash where it was just studio after studio churning out slop nonstop faster than customers were willing to buy it. If you go back and look at sales figures and account for inflation, E.T. that infamously wound up in a fucking landfill still sold better than most of these games these huge publishers/studios are making now when you account for the actual budgets involved.

The Content Vault is why this game and Bungie should die.

Sony paying almost 4 Billion for a company that isn't worth a half eaten sandwich is hilarious.

I loved Destiny. The Taken King was the highest the series ever got. I don't care about player peak when D2 became free to play seasonal content garbage. They made their Content Vault they can seal themselves in it.
