As someone who doesn't read the comics, Gunn's Superman was for me decent. It's very much a James Gunn movie, for better or worse. I think the good outweighs the bad, though. The whole "punk rock is le kindness" forced meme was weird, though. Fuck off with that reddit shit.
I liked that he was a return to Boy Scout Superman, after Snyder’s, to be honest out of character, depressed god take, and the whole evil Superman fad.

We do need hopeful Superman back. He is more relevant now more than ever.

That being said, yes it was better, but not ideal. There’s some Gunninsm that are hard to ignore such as him doubling down on making his parents evil. Just like Star Lord, and Peacemaker, Superman now has an evil dad, what a coincidence.

My hot take is that he was better than Snyder’s, closer to the spirit of Superman, the big blue boy scout that just wants to do good, but he still not good enough to be among the best takes of Superman.

It was a return to Boy Scout Superman. It was not a return to Aspirational Superman. No authority. No weight on his voice. That Superman doesn't get listened to. He gets mocked. Sorry but no dice.

At least Henry's Superman commanded rooms. Snyder overdid it but there has to be an inbetween Soylatteman and Sadman.

He is more hopeful but without feeling powerful, he cannot bring hope.

And that won't cut it. Do we need Gunn's daddy issues all over this?

I’m sure in the reprints of this issue they’ll make it so Lobo pops a massive chub instead of running and screaming 😅
Point of reference the comic cover

Secondly the whole issue was one long extended 1990s shitpost. Doing everything then that couldn't have been done in the 2000s, 2010s and 2020s by DC and Marvel.

The Tick is better at being Superman than Gunn-Man. Gunn's Superman is made to be this insecure bumbler and no one respects him. Good thing Lex "A1 A1 A1!!!!" Luthor has even worse writing to mitigate Gunn-Man's ineffectiveness.

yeah really Gunn going full Tromeo and not giving a fuck about the social media backlash, including somehow bringing Lemmy back from the dead, probably could do Lobo justice
if wb dc let him have an r gunn would be perfect for a lobo movie. its supes+star lord and none of the established comic lore vs movie personality conflict.

That’s why I said he had some Gunnism that are hard to ignore. Like I said earlier I do think he has issues. I never said he was perfect.

If you think about it, his Superman is very similar to Star Lord, including having daddy issues and being immature.

He has the boy scout part, but he is still missing the Man part of Superman.
