I looked this up and it turns out this is just one of the many closed species inhabiting a fantasy world. Another one of those species was this snapdragon dragon.

That looks like a Pokemon mashup rip-off.
The Ness one is kinda cute but not sure how I feel about someone "stealing" an urban legend and then profiting of it, since the design looks just like the average depictions of the monster.

I don't know if these count since I thought these are interesting they're basically humans mixed with fish DNA, and It saddens me that this artist basically accused another artist of stealing/tracing one of her original characters hair style or something on VK and a Twitter callout post.

I honestly like that the prices for these are more cheaper than the ones on this thread. I would honestly buy one, but I don't have my own credit card.

Honestly i've never gotten the appeal behind Closed Species. It's all so arbitrary. I could just draw my own right now, or maybe even create a picrew to spite them, and they could do nothing in a court of law to stop me. Demanding people to adhere to your own rules to create something out of their own damn head, it's just way too funny. It's like you're pretending to be Disney, but you don't have the corporate muscle to back you up. Looking at the artists behind this reminds me of a chihuahua barking behind a fence. Sure, it's loud and annoying. But it can't actually hurt you.

It's copyright as understood by vexatious litigants who don't understand fair use. If Russel Greer had a modicum of artistic talent and creativity, instead of his soulless obsession with celebrity culture, he would probably peddle his own Closed Species lickety-split.

You're right about that, I might as well make my own monster girls based around animals. I wish open species are more of a thing but that's just my opinion.

A couple people in this thread have already mentioned this, but for most of these closed species you're buying into the community more than buying the character design itself. The interaction with others is the real appeal. Usually they have closed dA groups, or discord servers, and they have roleplay sessions together or talk about worldbuilding. If you want to be part of the community, you have to pay, because the community self-enforces against "stealing" their species design. It's a bit like a cult, so the Russel Greer comparison is fairly accurate.

Note: If you're just lurking, a slot gives you a pass to make one member of a closed species-- following their rules and lore and stuff.

The moderators say they have no record of her payment nor proof that she paid for a slot, even way back then. So, she went into the general chatroom to decide and beg for a slot there.

The messages were deleted at some point, but here's a phone screenshot of them from her user. Also note that she has 40 pages of messages in this server: Could've asked this stuff at any time, but only now did the slot become relevant. Hmm.

Honestly, gonna throw my hat in and say this is probably fake. Literally on the 26th they hosted a community wide design and pay event. Meaning you had till the 26th to design a dainty and send it in on the 26th and pay 35$ (Which is the price for a common slot which this person claimed to have bought) and it would be official. They had 550 or so danties made.

Probably a right call the mods didn't hand a slot over. I'm shocked if they weren't banned because begging and this sort of negative attention pisses the mods off.

I really liked Yamio's (The Anniverse creator) art. She was a huge inspiration to me when I was younger and just starting to get into art. I stopped caring for her stuff after she made her CS her full time focus, and would very rarely post her own pieces. Her species is one of the ones that has the bids reach the high hundreds, and it's the most unoriginal of them all. Literally nekomimi bullshit.

I've never cared to read her species lore, but when you're an artist known for drawing nothing but fluffy cute animu girls why the hell would you try to implement heavy topics like slavery into your cute animu girl lore?

The part with "love", "passion", and that people are supposed to "feel" all the "inspiration" is so unprofessional and pretentious. It's quite obvious for everyone with a single working brain cell that adoptables are one of current market trends. "Passion" and "inspiration" don't matter in art market. Or any market at all. If anything, putting way too much "love" in something that you plan on selling is exhausting and counterproductive for business. "Would I spend any money on this" is not a question one should ask themselves about service or goods they're planning to sell.

I don't understand what exactly are these tips trying to reach. Be a sell out, but mask it behind "fun"? Tips for part-time artists who don't plan on making art their main income? Some psyop to drive people from the market? I legit don't get.

I agree with the comic in a sense that 'love' and 'passion' should be behind the art and that it shouldn't just look like you drew something merely to sell it for financial gain. Is that usually why people make adoptables? Yes. It is. But I think part of the meaning is to steer people away from making accounts that are filled with shitty adoptables on bases and then wondering why their art won't sell. Or just 'OC shovelware' in general. You go through the 'For Sale' side of Toyhouse, and there's just a plethora of low effort trash that only hoarders would buy.

It's something that isn't everyone's cup of tea, and I think it's a bit autistic when aforementioned adoptables by Pajuxi/Casin0s go for the price of a used car... but the comic does make sense in the world of closed species/adoptables.
