Yeah, let’s talk about Chuck Huber.
I can’t take it anymore. I keep seeing post after post of people being taken advantage of by someone who isn’t a friend and is barely even a colleague at this point.
I met Chuck during an internship in 2008. Since then, I’ve directed and acted alongside him in numerous properties.
When my friend and I decided to start a podcast, Chuck approached me with the idea of working together. He saw the opportunity to monetize the show and I declined.
It was after this that I saw past the veneer. He became shorter with me. Condescending. But, I’ve been in the biz since I was 14. I know how to deal with fragile egos.
In the summer of 2017, Chuck and I were booked at the same convention. I was given security because of an issue that I had with a fan.
The fan had harassed me for months. He’d said numerous disturbing things. One of which was something along the lines of “I’m going to teach her a lesson” when he’d see me at this particular con.
During an autograph session, this fan approached me. I froze. My security guy Will told me I’d lost all the color in my face and that it was up to me how I wanted to handle this. I shook my head and whispered, “I can’t do this.”
Will approached the fan. The fan didn’t leave. The police had to get involved.
A fellow actress and good friend walked me back to my hotel room. We were surrounded by many security guards. I kept saying “This is nuts… I’m just a voice actor.”
What I didn’t know at the time was the fan didn’t leave the con. He went from table to table speaking about how horrible I was. How horrible the security was.
Chuck, with no skin in the game, messaged the security service and tagged myself and other guests coming to the defense of the fan.
It made me feel like the worst person imaginable for feeling the way I did. It made me feel as if I’d wronged this fan for being legitimately scared.
I blocked Chuck’s email and phone number after this. I blocked him on Twitter after a situation with someone close to me. There are many stories from friends and colleagues that I could share, but those aren’t my stories to tell.
We’ve had the occasional run-in and done a couple of conventions together since then. I can’t play the nice game, so I just left most places he was and refused to be on panels with him.
NowVoiceThis definitely followed what I already knew about Chuck. He likes to make money. There’s nothing wrong with that.
I teach VO one-on-one from time to time. Sometimes those students are fans. Fans are often aspiring voice actors. That’s totally cool.
There is something wrong with taking advantage of your fanbase.
There is something wrong with gaslighting participants and those helping you in the process.
I really don’t have an end to this.
