I never thought much of STP, who just seemed like all they ever did was try to sound like whatever was popular at the moment.

For Core, they were pretty indebted to grunge, but I think it was more from having the same influences than any real copying. Purple had some lounge influences and turned down the AIC-lite nonsense, and by Tiny Music, they weren't even close to grunge, closer to 60s psychedelia than anything. I think they were really strong performers and songwriters that happened to be in the wrong place at the right time. I'm not the only one to think that STP should be given a second chance.

As for Chris, it's just a really odd time for him to have killed himself. He went on to do a solo career after Soundgarden broke up, and then Soundgarden came back and did the mostly-alright King Animal, then they were gearing up to do another album...and now he's dead? Seems like odd timing. There's still something more to this.

I heard about this on the radio yesterday and it shocked me considering I thought out of everyone Cornell was one of the more well adjusted ones after that whole scene. So is Pearl Jam the last guard of grunge or is Alice in Chains still scraping by with their new front man?

Grunge isn't really a music genre so much as a description one particular early 90's alt-rock scene, so it really depends on how expansive your definition is. The Melvins will be making music until Dale Crover keels over behind his kit, Mudhoney's still going strong, and Tad Doyle occasionally resurrects his old band when he isn't playing with Brothers of the Sonic Cloth.

It seems like the smaller the band was in the scene, the better adjusted they ended up, which makes sense. It's not just the bands either; Jack Endino, who produced Bleach and a bunch of other big early grunge albums, is still busy as fuck with production work.

Moral of the story, don't have depression and be a famous musician?
