Cartoon Industry thread - Showcasing the Spergery of the Animation Industry
I know people are all over these “pilots” these days, but does every single independent animation really have to be a “pilot?” It’s like they slap that label on anything as if their 5 minute short animations are going to be a big show one day.
While out for a drive, I was describing that Planetronika to my husband since Y2K nostalgia has been a current topic, and he was interested in checking it out, so I only was listening to it. Atrocious sound design, the audio mixing is all over the place, there was just noise all the time, and the voice-actors obviously have different microphones and settings. Nothing about it screams Y2K to me outside of cheap Flash games. Still have no interest in looking at it, but for sure if I must, I'm having it muted.

Sound design is right up there with voice acting in the category of “things animators figure they can blunder through well enough on their own.”
Pro tip for anyone making independent animation or film—nothing gives you away as a hack faster than bad audio engineering.

Well, in a way you can get more people to watch it if they can expect more of the content. In social media indie circles "potential show" is more exciting than just a short.
They’re gonna learn pretty quickly that it’s way way easier to produce 3d animated content than traditionally animated. Both this new show and knights of cydonia or whatever will take like 7-8 months each to produce an episode with an indie team, and it’s gonna kill its ADD fanbase
I haven't legit sat down and watched it but from first glance, I gotta disagree. It genuinely sounds like a GTA parody, "Planetronika", "Butterfly", "FREESTYLE", THE PILOT IS ABOUT BASKETBALL.
My first read is inauthentic Y2Kslop that was most likely a porn cartoon that in the middle of animating the creator realized "Oh wait! I can become the next big thing!". Also the animation's obnoxious
Final verdict: 4.5/10. These indie creators really need to stop relying on Y2K vibes to carry their shows. This animation has the same issue as Wastelandia and LokiIRL: Reminding me that Y2K was a good decade isn't enough to make me want your show. We loved Y2K because the stories in those gemmy shows knew how to make silly antics work.

And since Everybody Knows nostalgia follows predictably timed ten year patterns, it’s time to do Y2K nostalgia!! Slather it up with a heaping helping of Sega Dreamcast visual aesthetics, sprinkle in some corny Y2K gags… and bam!! Who will even notice that the placing is leaden and the characters are irritating?
It doesn’t feel like a passion project at all. Ironically it’s like someone pulled a Y2K era corporate executive out of cold storage and tasked them with commissioning a cartoon. Am I spiteful enough to want the future of indie animation to be shit like this, instead of shit like Steven Universe?

This is the one part I disagree with. As flawed as Steven Universe was, I could at least tell Rebecca Sugar wanted to write it. This feels like someone wanted a paycheck. I simply cannot respect that. I'll take the troonsloppiest SJW cartoon that was made by someone who's been dreaming to get it on air for years over the most based sexy Y2K indie show made by someone who really needed to pay rent ANY DAY.
my hot take is that Steven Universe (and to a lesser extent Gravity Falls and Star Vs) are actually half decent if you go into them with an open mind/desire to enjoy things, and it's not their fault everything that ripped them off sucks major dong
Except that SU was made to be lame and gay, literally, using the cartoon to push gay into the mainstream, and that mentality infected the Western cartoon side.

I agree, Steven Universe had issues but it wasn't the worst fucking cartoon ever. It's one of those cartoons that just had to be tweaked and have people other than Sugar's best friends be apart of the writing team. My main criticism is that they should've focuse a lot more on gem culture.
I actually liked Star Vs's ending, Gravity Fall's too. I didn't like SU's ending, but from what I know, not even the team wanted it to end like that. I think they should've replaced the episodes they got with Future to instead add them to the main series and make the ending not as rushed, unsatisfying, and disecrating of Rose/Pink.
