Since John hasn't REALLY been in the industry, he never got that it's not uncommon to have team A do a build and have a team B in another time zone QA the build during team A's downtime.
A lot of times, even Black/Gray box testing can pretty much tell you the bug..you didn't put in an exception handler here, you didn't free up memory, you created a race condition..or whatever

A lot of times it's really beneficial b/c you have time efficiency (project downtime reduced) and you have some team separation so that you don't talk one another into the same assumptions and mistakes
and you can get a cleaner acceptance test

and the asynchronous comms for test/debug can kind of be helpful because you TEND to put it in writing which keeps things clear and trackable as opposed to "you know what I mean" hallway discussions (good for UX and such, not so much for other stuff)
