It's really amazing that a bunch of 19 year olds are trying to tell me what was on afternoon cartoons in fucking 1992.

I'm 34 years old...I watched BTAS from day one and I collected the sticker book that had images from the episodes. I was about 8 or 9. I want this movie. BTAS is big to me.

In the Welcome to Metropolis series she shoved a pistol into Jimmy Olson's mouth and threatened to blow his brains out. Wouldn't that rate as attempted murder by itself? Or at any rate something that would send you away for a long, long time?

And that's just one of the multiple acts of violence she and Ivy commit in the series.

I freely admit I don't know shit about comics (especially DC) aside from the occasional title I borrow from the library, never watched that animated series, have no real idea what the fuck an "anti-villain" even is, etc. Just curious Is this kind of thing memory holed nowadays or somehow hand waved off?

Basically blame the New52 for the way Harley is treated by fans now. Prior to that she was a popular but minor character in the Batman books. I think she was in a team book with Catwoman and Poison Ivy called Gotham City Sirens that ran until the reboot, which did do a good job of breaking her away from the Joker for a bit.
Come New52 and they put her on the Suicide Squad, dumped her old costume for the Hot Topic look, and basically she became really popular all of a sudden. Then they put her in the Suicide Squad movie, which I think is when people started calling her a feminist icon and conveniently forgot her backstory where she slept with her teachers to get her degree and was the poster child for battered girlfriend syndrome.
Of course, even back in the day when they paired her up with Poison Ivy instead of Joker she was still in an abusive relationship. Ivy would always act like the really possessive girlfriend who didn't want you talking to all your old friends and trying to control your every action.

On the one side, you have the people freaking out that their wild-girl hottie waifu is doing the sex (with anyone but their self-insert fan character).

On the other, you have the people defending the sexualization of a character who is legally insane and probably not capable of meaningful consent.

Can I just hold everyone in this Very Important Culture War in contempt and go about my business?

I keep reading messages of people getting butthurt over Harley VA. T-They are closing their eyes and trying to masturbate to it isn't it?. Ew.
Also, people still complaining about the fart joke. A fart joke on a cartoon, preposterous.
All this people must be the soul of the party, assuming they are invited to any party of course.

I saw an unskippable trailer for this before a Redbox movie. It looked embarrassingly cheap. My dad had to grunt and leave the room halfway through.

People who normally read the comics complained. tumblr and Twitter who barely knew the character rejoiced at such a amazing feminist icon.
Nah , I remember many people who doesn't read comic complained about that.
Also one of the major complain about the new52's begining among the internet was how 'mysoginist' it was with the sexualization of Amanda waller, harley ,Iris west(well, that case begin before th reboot),starfire,...
Harley become a feminist icon when Injustice comic began and Tom Taylor make a decent work with her.
