Theory, Null got annoyed with the dancing dog avatars and neutered gifs as a result.

Huh, you're right, I've updated my post to honor my mongol ancestors. For some reason I expected the preview to actually work. No idea what it clobbers the piss out of the image, then.

I know giphy sort of does the same thing if you try to save the gif before it finilizes; you end up grabbing whatever frame you click on as a jpg.

These were animated before & are animated when I post them elsewhere. They're less than 9 KB & I can't figure out wtf is wrong.

EDIT: NOW they work, but still not as avatars.

I used to be able to change into animated gif avatars, but can't seem to make it work anymore. Sad.

after hours of trial and error I'm pretty sure the limits are 1,000,000 bytes and about 95 frames.

I miss the expanded verticality to avatars we briefly had.

after more hours of trial and error I have concluded that there are no static limits, it's just whatever the server feels like accepting at the time. my current avatar is 365KB and 131 frames of animation. the limit seems to be around 400KB today.
