Except in relation to federal office, such clauses would not have even been prohibited by the Constitution, which only prohibited such tests for federal office and the prohibition would not apply to the states. Only after the 14th Amendment and the interpretation of it that applied the Bill of Rights, including the First Amendment, to the states, would such laws even have been invalid under the First Amendment.

As with any sort of movement or ideology, the crazy obnoxious ones are typically the loudest. I don't know too many people who specifically identify as atheistic, but that's probably because only angsty, rebellious teenagers feel the need to constantly go on about how there's no God, or how people who'd even consider the idea that there might be a force beyond human comprehension are idiotic. For people who apparently hate dogmas involving one's spiritual beliefs, they certainly do like to push their spiritual beliefs (or lack of) onto others in a very dogmatic manner.
