Same with Overlord, which I thought would get more interesting when it hinted that other players were in the world besides Momonga. Only for it to be revealed that wasn't the case at all and he was still alone. Again they never make anything actually matter- be it the other characters, the world building, even the fights are just nothing burgers because there are no stakes.
I think this is a hot take but I think Overlord (or similar types of works) are actually funny in a brainrot manner.

You just don't treat it as having any stakes but look at the sheer absurdity and insanity of everything that unfolds.

It's the same reason why I could even go into One Punch Man (which is sorta similar where if the situation looks really dire Saitama just gets rid of the guy causing problems) or pre-Limbus Project Moon to begin with.

Most Isekai are shit if you read them as shonen. Maybe Mushoku Tensei works, his powers end up being just having an atavism from Laplace, the buck-broken demon lord that gives him big mana at the cost of no martial arts chi energy and as a result Rudeus makes the top 10 in the power rankings for the setting eventually but he's pretty far from #1.

Most of the better isekai, like Slimeguy and Overlord, the understanding is that the fights don't matter and the dwell more on having a fun cast. I think the Overlord gag that Ainz is a shit-tier Gatcha/MMO addict middle-manager that has no business being a supreme ruler and he has to rely on his subordinates while gaslighting them about his competence is generally pretty funny but it definitely gets tired after a while.

The isekai that I think work the worst are the ones that don't dwell on a fun cast but expect shit to be interesting anyway. Technically not an Isekai but Solo Leveling is probably the worst example of this, just 100% a power fantasy about a Korean male somehow not being the lowest non-African being in existence.

It helps that Rudeus isn't the chosen one of his setting. He's important but the story goes out of its way to establish that he's not there as the grand hero of the world.

There's a reason, love it or hate it, that Konosuba has always been thought of as one of the best Isekai. It doesn't take itself all that seriously and the stakes aren't all that high from what I remember because Kazuma just gets revived by Aqua if he dies.

The Toei anime has been bogged down by pacing and animation issues for the past twenty years, this one is supposed to rectify both while providing modern fans (especially American ones that got filtered by the 4kids dub) a way to reasonably watch things from the beginning.
Honestly there are a few early 2000's shonen that could benefit from a modern refresh. Naruto and Bleach were very negatively effected both by filler in canon episodes as well as some very weird animation choices

The problem is rehashing old series verbatim is the hallmark of a dying industry. Anime is no stranger to digging up the corpse of a series long run, but near-universally it has changes to the story tacked on. The One Piece gets a pass because the motivation is very clearly to give an animated adaptation the quality it deserves on the cusp of the series reaching a finale (I’m convinced we’re closer to finding out what the One Piece is than people assume, and that the series will end before 2030), which will likely be global news.

Isekai are like idol anime, it's only interesting when the characters has to struggle against an actual threat. Once they become OP then it devolves into lore faggotary and waifu wars. Even Konosuba latest season was unwatchable exactly for those reasons.
Speaking of MMO anime, does anyone remember Log Horizon? I remember people being incredibly hyped for it but you never hear about it anymore
It was what I thought of when the subject of good MMO anime came up. The only thing I remember is the first arc where the main cast buys as much real estate at possible before people realize how it's suddenly important when you are stuck 24/7 in a game. Very Jewish.

Apperantly the LNs are dead because the author wad convicted of tax evasion. I remember people really disliked some mary sue character the author jammed in later on.

I can understand the absurdity if it's a show that doesn't treat itself all that seriously, such as One Punch Man. However too many of these shows do so in a manner that just doesn't land or don't try at all and still act like they're serious.

I really wanted to like overlord but I really do wish it was about an actual evil skeleton overlord over just another isekai, it would be cool to like see the world of managing a dungeon and minions from the perspective of a villain

I dunno it feels just like more nostalgiabait “disney-remake-ism” in terms of pacing issues great. but if it aint broke don’t fix it, I find the original style better than the more recent stuff. Plus it’s a spit in the face of the korean sweatshop workers who had to draw all those scenes by hand.

OPM treats itself way more seriously than Overlord even in the Webcomic.

Speaking of Isekais, Overlord is the only Isekai I can tolerate watching/reading to any extent.

Even Konosuba latest season was unwatchable exactly for those reasons.
Konosuba is unreasonably dragged out to make money, I never watched it but from what I heard they just kept writing stuff even after the OG novel's finale.

This is how I felt about Re:Zero. Going into it I didn't realize it was an Isekai LN. The plot meanders a lot and the stakes don't come across as important enough to keep me invested. If you read the LNs, according to fans, they explain a lot more of the world and characters. As an anime layman I got lost often because I didn't have background knowledge. I think a lot of LN to anime adaptations need tighter management, otherwise the story meanders.
Frieren hasn't done that so far, but the mage license test almost made me quit the manga because it was a strong tonal shift. The character designs didn't help either, some were too modern and clashed with the fantasy setting.
Witch Hat Atelier manga has amazingly detailed backgrounds and strong design. I quit the manga when they introduced modern problems into a fantasy setting (waaaa I can't see my gay boyfriend because of discrimination) which took me right out. It's a shame because it had a lot of potential. I assume the anime follows the manga closely but I haven't watched it.

Also they are spending literally a year to build up what I think is killing Serie and then going on an almost year-long hiatus with seemingly no end in sight (from what I heard the manga continues this July however).

Interesting theory. I picked up the manga again and I haven't seen her in a while so I had forgotten she's a threat. I don't think Frieren would kill a fellow elf. I thought I read the hiatus ended last year, not this year. Hopefully that doesn't kill the momentum for the anime.
Another manga I enjoyed was Delicious in Dungeon. The world building and character design were well thought out, and the plot wraps up nicely. I had forgotten what a well written story looked like. It makes me want to see more of the world she created but at the same time I'm happy to read a definite end.

Frieren isn't assassinating Serie, it's the Imperials who are trying to do it and we have no idea who the culprit even is.

My brother doesn't understand why I don't want to touch this manga with a ten foot pole. I tried explaining that it was UN astroturfed woke shit and he looked at me like I was insane.

I wanted to react with both a laughing and heart emoji. It could be argued the wheel chair character was 'woke' but I didn't see it like that because it made sense a cripple would want a better means to travel besides laying in a horse drawn cart. I think he might have been an evil character too so I didn't see any soft pandering to people in wheelchairs.
Is it true there are trans characters now in WHA? I skimmed commentary and didn't want to believe it. One of the mage girls has short hair but she's still a girl.

I can't fix the quote about Frieren but I don't think I'm there yet in the story or I've forgotten. I'll keep it in mind.

Ostatnio edytowane:
Because a lot of anime back in the 80s and 90s were produced insanely fast. So they would blow through the material available and then have to stall to wait for the manga to get further.

That's why Naruto, Bleach and Full Metal Alchemist had a ton of filler it's also why FMA. 2003 had a different story. The mangaka told them to do it so they wouldn't waste time waiting for her to finish the Manga.
In my opinion, Soul Eater was a huge victim of that as well. The anime ending was horrible, I didn't read the manga but I heard it was better.
