Capital Nationalism evolved from tribalism/clan behavior which was the standard.

It just got bigger all the time.

This is why I don't think conservatives and nationalists are the same thing.

I would not equate tribalism to proto-nationalism since it was for the most part focused on familial ties (clan behavior), but rather as a precursor towards hereditary monarchy which then progressed towards a different form. There is a lot of distance between tribalism and nationalism, and I am pretty sure anyone would find it ridiculous to label tribals in the Andamans or Amazon as nations.

I think your post still reinforces my point. Nationalism evolved/progressed from tribalism. It is not some idea natural to all human that has existed forever. It was developed and had many intermediate forms. The problem of the temperamental conservative is that he lives forever in the now and does not understand that the ideas he holds are the result of progress. He cannot even properly grasp nationalism because he does not understand how the very concept of it came to be. It's the exact same reason why the temperamental conservative cannot identify which past time period he wants to move towards because it would imply progression in a specific direction. He merely points to a vague idea of common sense traditions from somewhere in the undefined past.
