Tommie is an unreliable narrator among other things so this is all based off events he has said happened at one point in his life or another.

That said we know that the relationship with his family is strained at best so at what point did they decide he isn't worth the oxygen and cut him loose?
 
If it wasn't during his childhood, then him becoming a hippie made his parents regret having him.
