An angry mob ran down a Utah man with a car then beat him to death after they heard he gave his pregnant girlfriend a black eye, reports said.

At least six people swarmed 41-year-old Fred Valdamar Ortiz behind Smith’s grocery store in Magna on Monday afternoon, Fox 13 reported.

Ortiz’s girlfriend is a dog breeder and the group was over her home looking for a puppy when she told them he hit her and gave her a black eye a few days earlier, Fox 13 said, citing arrest records.

Ortiz drove by on a scooter and the furious group – which included a 13-year old – darted out of the house after him.

One suspect, 19-year-old Osyeanna Martinez, hit Ortiz with a Volkswagen Beetle, KUTZ reported. Ortiz kept running, but his attackers were soon upon him, using a pole while he was on the ground, Fox 13 said.

Surveillance footage from a restaurant nearby showed Martinez throwing two boards at Ortiz’s back and head, KUTV said. Police only identified one of the other suspects using a full name, 18-year-old Xandre Sky Hill, the TV station said.

The other accused were identified in a police report using only their initials, according to KUTV. All of the suspects were in their teens and early 20s, the station said.

It wouldn't be the first time someone got killed over a spurious accusation, but entirely possible he's an abusive shitbag. That said, it seems sketchy to me because of how abusive relationships actually tend to play out a lot. Dunno. Doesn't really matter now.

They say she cited arrest records, but not that she cited arrest records for that specific incident, which begs the question of what arrest records she was citing and whether they were even relevant to any preexisting domestic abuse-- not to mention the lack of statement about the adjudication of any of those associated allegations. It's extremely difficult to believe that he was arrested for domestic abuse and didn't get plainly digested by the legal system and crapped out in a prison, or that there was reason to believe that he wouldn't have been. Furthermore, most domestic violence cases are somewhere in the field of "reciprocal" and "toxic environment" to begin with rather than "unilaterally battered wife".
