I think it was less outright invasion and more parasitation instead. They wanted a big herd of consumeristic cattle, essentially. Stay asleep, consume, marry and reproduce to continue the cycle so that the aliens have more to grift while they pretend to be human. Recognising and resisting is a thing for a reason.
I don't think the different denominations are what really caused the problem. The problem really started with the churches trying to appease the general population rather than actually preaching the scriptures. Most modern western churches aren't even Christian anymore, it's just hippieanity.
I'd take a third option and say that both are true, because holy fuck, before all of this shit hit the fan I didn't consider myself racist in the slightest. Even now I still feel like the color of our skin shouldn't matter or even religion or gender or any dumb shit people keep on fighting over; at the end of the day, we're all human and we should be working to better our own lives and those around us.
