I'm sure there was a poll on some dating site or tranny echo chamber a while back surveying dating preferences that revealed only about 20% of trannies would date another tranny as their first choice.

taking cross sex hormones messes you up hard, both on a physical and emotional level. makes you ugly as fuck, changes your emotional reaction to different situations, ruins your libido (when blocking T in men) or sends it into overdrive (when giving excess T to women), etc. and many get surgery on top of that, which basically turns them into lifelong cripples.
also, if you didn't have it to begin with, then getting tranny surgery might actually give you real body dysphoria, as in feeling alienated from your physical body because of how fucked up it is now.

with all that in mind, how could their lives NOT turn into trainwrecks? think about living with so many fucked up problems, so much damage on your body, having to deal with it every single day for the rest of your life. i would certainly go crazy from it.

Comparing it to a lobotomy is very apt, because in any other circumstance we'd frown upon enacting irreversible medical procedures on the mentally ill.
