One of the more obvious things that irked me was there's a villain in this who's supposed to be the son of the Ken Watanabe character from the previous movies, except they apparently cut his entire motivation and backstory out of the movie, because it's never said anywhere.

And he's only in the movie for a few scenes anyway.

The bad guy stuff in general was lame. Like, Godzilla and King Kong fighting isn't enough to carry a movie? You gotta throw in a stupid bad guy plot?

My only real hang up with big monster movies are the same I have for slashers; too many of them forget that the human characters should at least be kind of okay and with at least 1.5 dimensions to it. I actually squint a bit at people when they demand more monster fights and not mention that issue, because at that point you should just make the fight yourself with the minis.

I mean, I ain't much better, I like watching people getting butchered in slasher films. I also liked several of the big monster films I saw as a kid. One of my favorite movies with those sorts of effects are disaster films. I just remembered when the dead meat had some personality. @Gaear Grimsrud just brought up an example of my issues with these films, where they cut out stuff that would actually make the non explosion parts interesting.

With Bob, it's fucking hilarious because to see him try really hard to pretend this shit's intellectual at all. He's so desperate to pretend he is a smart smart with a triple digit IQ and a wrinkly brain.

Because every big film company wants to have what Marvel had without understanding what makes the buildup of each character so important. The first few DCEU films were crap because they rush to get to the big team up so they can catch up with Marvel.

That's not to say Godzilla can't have story arcs. My favorite era of Godzilla movies is the Heisei Era. Sure, it's not as connected as the other big cinematic universes today (there's only a single recurring character through six of the seven Heisei films), it still had common themes and plot threads that would drive the overall stories of each film, like the debate on how to treat a force of nature like Godzilla himself that never really has a clear answer.

I came to a realization when I saw his beloved "monke vs. liz" in the theater. Movie theaters aren't so great anymore. Between popcorn that isn't properly salted, cackling kids, overly compressed sound blasting through the speakers, and (worst of all) assholes who just feel that they have to look at their phones and thus creating a distracting light in the middle of the action, it's not really worth the trip. I'd rather be at home where I can gave more control over the proceedings.

One problem that I think would occur for Bob if streaming all but eliminated the cinema experience is that ge wouldn't get the scoop over the general audience. He wouldn't be able to separate himself as a critic as much because, even if streaming platforms did hand out early review codes, he's narrowed his brand down enough to where he won't get any of them.

Like you said, healthy people don’t label themselves or others. And they don’t try to be something they’re not. They follow their passions and let their actions speak for themselves. They go out into the world ready to try new experiences and make something of themselves.

But Bob and his ilk are all talk and no action. They act so high and mighty despite the fact they’re losers. I mean, what have they accomplished? Who’s going to remember them when they’re gone? No one, because they’re weren’t good people. They’re not soldiers, doctors, leaders, they’re failures. They give upwhen the going gets tough.

I didn't catch his name the initially. My wife actually had to lean in and whisper it to me. He was just...there. If he wasn't going to do much in the story other than ride the lightning, why even name him Serizawa? We had two full movies of building his father's character and then they just drop his son in without any explanation? Terrible decision.

The villain was shit, too, as you said. His goal wasn't a bad one, but they framed him as a mustache twirling, cackling asshole anyway. If there needed to be an outside malevolent force, they should have gone with aliens controlling Godzilla's mind and this necessitating Mecha Godzilla as a counter with Serizawa's kid making an arduous choice to destroy the creature his father loved.

I would also add that Mecha Godzilla looked terrible design wise and having him show up so late was a great mistake.

That's not to say Godzilla can't have story arcs. My favorite era of Godzilla movies is the Heisei Era. The Heisei Era is the most consistent. That's why it's the best. Its tone, technology, and effects are not radically different from one entry to the next. The fact that they kept making most of them back to back is what kept it that way. The way the Monsterverse has been fleshed out, it feels like all the time taken between releases forces it to be more like the popular trend and follow the MCU, much to its detriment. The 2014 Godzilla has almost no resemblance to the recent release and that's a problem.

Why on Earth would you draw inspiration from that film of all fricken things?
