I mean, they’ve been talking about how Trump perpetuated racism against Asians because of the origins of the virus and seeing how all this came around the one year anniversary of what could be seen as the height of the pandemic with everything locked down and everyone was saying to stay home to flatten the curve...everything has just fallen into place.

Another part of the virtue signaling is most likely from the shootings in and around Atlanta the other day when a 21 year old man shot up massage parlors run by Asians. But the dude who did it said it wasn't racially motivated but because he was addicted to sex, but people probably ignored that and just assumed it was a hate based crime. (I'm not saying hate crimes don't exist of course and maybe they did increase because of COVID, but it's sketchy to automatically a shooting was racially motivated)
He also coincidentally posted anti-asian memes a couple days before but idk, I'll trust the words of a guy who shoots up a massage parlor because they won't wank him off I guess

I think it's more a case of one person does it, she makes a decent amount of money, then tells her friends about it and it spreads to others. Arryn probably talked to Barbara about how much she made. Griffon said she decided to do one after talking to some woman at theCHIVE who had one. These minor internet celebrities have had a portion of their fan base thirsting for the for a long time and will take anything so it's some easy extra income.
