Don't think so. Maybe you're remembering something the cops said (IIRC some officers involved in the investigation said they believe he was defending himself).
If the prosecutors (there's multiple) believed he was lawfully defending himself they would have an ethical duty to refuse to prosecute it and it would be prosecutorial misconduct for them to continue with it. So I doubt they said that.

The criminal complaint filed by the prosecutor to support his initial arrest is practically a statement that his actions were all done in self defense, more than enough to substantiate Kyle's claim in court. The document as written seems almost like they were putting in writing the justification to decline charging him at all. It's a weirdly uneven document like that.
The additional evidence, testimony, and video gathered by his attorneys is just frosting on the cake. Any attempt to sidestep it and apply special pleading to this case will completely gut self defense and make it de facto illegal to defend yourself from a mob.
In a rational setting, this case would have been unlikely to go to the arrest phase, and never to trial. Unfortunately we are entering into anarcho-tyranny territory so the government has to be weaponized for political purposes.
Don't worry though, destroying people's trust in government and undermining the social contract that maintains civil peace could never end badly.

I remember that the prosecutor's original written case/justification that he filed read like what a defendant would argue as a self defense claim. I thing the prosecutor is going to try to invalidate Kyle's right to self defense because of his age.

Good fucking luck with that legal hail mary. It's never been successfully argued in court because it makes no sense. If a you can charge a defendent with a crime, they can put up a defense. Otherwise what would be the point of a trial?
It's not like there isn't precedent for teenagers, or younger, being cleared of charges because of self defense claims.

The prosecutor is prosecuting from ideology, not the law. Kyle gave the golem a black eye so he must be punished.

I understand that, but I don't believe there is a legal avenue that can be used to deny Kyle from putting forth a self defense claim.
Of course the process is the punishment, so I suppose if ultimately he is found not guilty the Establishment will have been satisfied with ruining his life regardless. And naturally when an Antifa assassin shoots him in the back during an ambush no charges will be filed.

Honestly, Kyle may be in a place where the prosecutors aren't all in on the BLM train and the road to a progressive utopia and just looking to purge the MAGA cancer from society. That or there's no real way that progressive mindset can be argued in court unless everyone else is like minded. Some leftists find tests to see how dedicated they are to the cause. Kyle probably presents one of those tests.
