I have a theory that everything being documented online is one of the reasons why we have so many cringy 'tards these days. It's like a demented version of the Sunk-Cost Fallacy: their image is already completely fucked, they have no incentive to try to redeem themselves and instead just sink even deeper into the mire of fake validation.

This may go along with my theory about online echo chambers creating an unprecedented amount of tardery. These people with weird predilections find fellow weirdos who tell them that the weird, degenerate shit they do is totally normal and totally "valid" (whatever that means). This shit would otherwise be stomped out in the real world by people shaming and shunning them.

They feed into the echo chambers and it just churns, creating maladjusted individuals. People have a finite amount of time and energy to put into building relationships and these freaks put it all into superficial internet connections. I think it's why they have no sense of self-identity and they tend to glom onto whatever political, gender, sexuality identity is popular.

They need to get offline and build real life, face-to-face relationships. And, I never thought I would say this without a hint of irony, but some of these motherfuckers need Jesus or Allah or Vishnu.

I wonder whether or not it is wise to put an age limit on social media as we do driving, drinking, ciggs etc. Not a full on moratorium obviously, that would backfire terribly, but maybe late grade school you get access to a school-wide social media site, then in middle school a state wide one comprising of the state schools. Maybe in highschool it bumps up to a worldwide one with schools being able to connect to ones around the globe.

it’s not like America values schooling anyway so this will never happen, and I’m pretty sure some parents will screech about their freedom to exploit their kids for income, but this all out “ok, you turned 14 here’s the world with no limits” seems insane.

You’re technically not supposed to have social media before you’re 13, in the US (COPPA) but you can just put an older birth date on Facebook or whatever.

It’s simply so much harder to monitor. With alcohol, while you can buy it online, someone with an ID has to sign for it when it’s delivered. With cars, I know parents will let their underage kids drive on their property sometimes, but you’re not gonna let your 12 year old drive around town because of all the potential extremely negative consequences. You can hide your keys but unless you shut your kid in the house you’re not going to prevent them from getting online somehow.

iirc (remembering the post from back in my tumblr days) that post was a troll, but a metric fuckton of troons came out of the woodwork to defend it as though it weren't and argue that trans-identified men should be permitted to coercively rape (and actually rape, and physically assault) any lesbians they desire. It was pretty horrifying to watch.

That’s part of the reason why I think there should be alternatives. And not just a hard “no” Part of is that the internet is still pretty much a baby, let alone social media. And no one has and idea what looks “normal” for online interaction.
Giving, say teachers, the ability to design a social network that could then be moderated and issues dealt with irl I think would fix some of the underage problems. Sure you can lie and get a Facebook or Twitter acct or you can go to the one with all the people your age anyway.
