My heart goes out to that girl. She seems like a pretty bright child for her age, organizing school activities and a library even? By contacting authors and publishers to ask for book donations. Sure, the mother probably helped a lot, but still, that ambition deserves recognition.

That no one in that family is then looking into "puberty blockers" baffles me. Even when the creators went out of their way to design female versions of the popular playable characters (like Fem!Shep) surprise surprise, most of them were never used by the target audience.

This is just wrong. 18% of Shepards are female, which is probably commensurate with the female share of the audience.

Generally, things that would be dealbreakers to small shares of the audience can be important to cater to, because they are important for the word of mouth / IRL friend groups. Especially if it's a multiplayer game.

Make a game with a goal other than violence (in the case of Prince of Persia, platform-hopping)
Make it play at a slightly relaxed pace.
Add tons of atmosphere and aesthetic.
Add some handsome men with their shirtsleeves off.

How am I doing so far?

Bad. I can think of dozens of games that fullfil at least 3 of those 4 criteria and aren't popular among women, as a matter of fact, the most unpopular game among women (EVE Online) is one.

* The player's [emergent] story should matter in the grand scale of things.
* The game should promise regular rewards / advancement and either follow up on it or cleverly disguise the fact it doesn't.
* Optimize for potatoes and laptops, women don't have high-end gaming PCs and will not upgrade on the regular because they don't have to keep up with their social groups.
* Most importantly don't make women lose, women hate losing. For social reasons, women have an easier time looking back on the time wasted and going, "well fuck this shit sideways with a rusty switchblade, I'm never playing it again". I'm not saying make it journo-mode. Add grinding if you can, add some orthogonal shit to do so they're entertained while they're gitting gud, never take away saved progress.

As a woman, I’m not somehow egregiously offended by Call of Duty not being marketed to me, and I don’t know why I would be. There’s lot of products where the intended audience is someone who is not me, because they’re older, younger, a different race, from a different part of the country, whatever.

Some of us women just like playing COD or Doom just the way it is. But the bull dyke demographic is admittedly small.
I'm sure the demographics of games like Harvest moon or Animal Crossing are significantly female too. It's the only things my gf plays.
