An Open Letter to Leonard F. Shaner, Jr. (TRIGGER WARNING: This post contains mild white knighting)
Dear Lenny (@The_Knight_Rider ),
This is your friend Saul. Since you don't seem to understand what's going on here, and also seem to be increasingly frustrated, I thought I'd help you out with some real advice / nuggets of how-to-successfully-manage-your-mental-illness wisdom.
The first step is understanding that you have a problem. We aren't your typical bullies. We aren't preying on your weaknesses and making fun of you because you're fat or autistic or a closeted homosexual or an adult man who plays with trains.
If you actually read the forums, you'll find that a lot (okay most) of us are somewhere on the "spectrum," around a quarter of us are some flavor of queer, and pretty much all of us have ridiculously unproductive interests/hobbies. And if you go on over to Slut Hate (I honestly don't know if you have access to our pics thread) you'll find that a lot of us are also -- if not as chubby as you -- not exactly thin.
So, why are we making fun of you? Well, it's gotta be a PA railroad conspiracy. Nope. Sorry. We have nearly 6,000 members -- most of whom registered before your Colebrookdale drama and almost none of whom live in Pennsylvania. We have hundreds of other threads that you can read; and none of them involve trains. We really don't care about that.
The reason we're making fun of you is that our site exists to make fun of ridiculous assholes on the internet. And the fact that we collectively think you are, at the present time, the second biggest asshole on the internet should give you pause. It should make you reevaluate your behavior.
Because that's ultimately what this is about: Your sociopathic behavior. In my experience with this site, I've come to the conclusion that lolcows are funny because not only are you assholes/sociopaths (you don't care about the needs/feelings of others), you're incompetent sociopaths. You're too lazy to consider that even if you don't care about other people, they still exist and will react to your behavior.
Thus, you act on impulse without thinking ahead about the consequences: "I hate Sonic's blue arms. I know! I'll go vandalize GameStop displays to get rid of them!", "I want buttsex. I know! I'll incessantly harass this girl and call her my wife! And rape my little sister!", "I want train parts. I know! I'll steal them!"
This unwillingness to see how other people (game store employees, the girls you harass/rape, or the train yard owners/managers you steal from) will be hurt by, and thus respond to, your actions sets you up for epic failure.
And we sit by and laugh as you get your comeuppance. Why? Because it's both funny and satisfying.
So, here's my advice. Whenever you feel like doing something, ask yourself: "Is the thing I'm about to do going to impact anyone else? If so, how would I react if the situation was reversed and someone did that to me? Okay, how can I minimize the negative impact here?"
And, similarly, when bad things happen to you, don't just write them off as the result of conspiracies or trolls. Try to examine how *your behavior* made other people feel and how that contributed to the event.
I know it sounds trite, but as a high-functioning autist myself, thinking through things logically like this has really helped me.
Oh, and for fuck's sake, learn how to spell "private."
