I heard that part of the reason Reagan won so big against either Carter or Mondale (before my time) was that the media called it early and depressed turn out on the west coast. Probably trying to avoid a similar situation.

Reagan pounded Mondale's ass in the debates too not to mention having a much more drab personality compared to Reagan being like a relatable grandpa type figure, with Carter he had Iran hostage crisis and the OPEC oil crisis that really hobbled his presidency.
